    1854-65 1d REDS - PLATE 53 - EXTREMELY RARE STRIP OF THREE ON COVER TO CONSTANTINOPLE - 16 Sep. 1857 mourning env. (minor imperfections) to the commander of HMS Osprey, franked with C9A TH-TJ strip of three from the very rare plate 53 (SG £4500 per stamp off-cover; small part top right corner perf missing), tied by fine CHESTER spoons and additionally tied by red CONSTANTINOPLE arrival cds. The 3d military rate to the Baltic Fleet had expired a year earlier, yet this article appears sent untaxed at that rate. An extraordinarily rare and important cover; we know of only four other plate 53 covers, all single uses. Significant exhibit item.
