661 FALMOUTH (JAMAICA) - SHIP'S BAG COVER WITH G.B. 1/- GREEN TIED BY ST. THOMAS "C51; Unusual May 1871 'Seagrove' cover (usual filing notes affect address) from "Ed. Wickham" (serving on HMS Lapwing at Jamaica at this date) to Portsea franked for the full 1/- rate with a GB Large White Letters 1/- Green (pl.4) tied by what appears to be a light "C51" numeral of St. Thomas; this exceptional cancellation for (supposedly closed bag) Naval Mail may have been due to the letter originating in Falmouth and being taken to St. Thomas by the RMSP service and then posted. There is no backstamp apart from Portsmouth (26 June 1871), which fits with the RMSP SS Nile's voyage from St. Thomas (13 June) to Plymouth (25 June). Ex Osborn. PHOTO. £150
