| 365 | PERSIAN INVASION - DUKE OF WELLINGTON HIMSELF COMMENTS ON THE SIEGE OF HERAT; Remarkable and very fine Autograph 19 Nov. 1838 Letter Signed, together with original autograph signed franked envelope sent from London to Beaconsfield, both in the Duke of Wellington's distinctive hand and both signed "Wellington" by him. The letter includes brief but very significant comments on Herat; "I hope that Herat will not fall. That may save us." Prophetic words; the Siege had lasted 10 months but was finally lifted when the Persian forces withdrew on 28 Sept. 1838; however, word of the withdrawal had not reached England when the Duke wrote this letter. In the end, as is well known, the saving of Herat did not eventually save Britain from suffering one of her worst ever military disasters in Afghanistan, the Massacre of the Khyber Pass, a couple of years later. Rare personal comment by Britain's most famous military leader and the hero of Waterloo. PHOTO. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||||

| 419 | ESQUIMAULT, VANCOUVER ISLAND - RARE 7d-RATE OFFICER'S CONCESSION RATE COVER VIA PANAMA TO G.B.; Feb. 1869 env. (flap lost but attractive) ex the 'Cochrane' correspondence to a fellow Naval Officer on "H.M.S. Cumberland" at Sheerness in Kent, significantly franked by GB Large White Letters 6d Mauve (pl.6) and 1d Red (pl.100) for the special 'Via Panama 7d Rate', tied by London Foreign Branch barred "B" cancels, having a partial 30 Mar. 1869 London backstamp. The writer had yet to be identified, but the only suitable British ship beyond Panama at this date was HMS Zealous which was stationed at Esquimault on Vancouver Island at this time. The letter would have been sent down to Panama and crossed the isthmus before catching the RMSP Douro that reached Plymouth (from Colon) on 28 Mar. 1869, hence the backstamps. Rare thus; the 7d rate (see Naval Officers' Letters Introduction, p.3) can only indicate mail from the Pacific beyond Panama at this date. Plus Dec. 1899 env. ex "HMS WARSPITE" (at Esquimault) to Ireland with GB 1d Lilac tied (unusually) by mostly v. fine "PAQUEBOT/LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. Ex Osborne. (2).
