'SIRIUS'; 30 Apr. 1838 EL (minor dusting and slightly weak folds but attractive) from "New York" to Liverpool endorsed on the front to be carried "P. [Ship] North America", but this then changed to "Pr [S.S.] Sirius" (presumably when the sender learned of the new-fangled steamer's taking letters fro Britain); charged "1/9" with a mostly fine red boxed step-type "FALMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" and fine orange-red 22 May "LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. on the top flap. Amusing contents with the tantalising note that "I have received the [trading] House's letter of the 31st Ult[im]o [i.e. 31 Mar.] by the Sirius."; what a challenge it would be to find that cover to put with this one! Rare cover carried on the first Atlantic crossing from America by a Steam vessel. Important Exhibition Item for any Transatlantic Mails Collection. [Not previously recorded; recently discovered by Cavendish's describers in a mixed Ship Letters collection!
