HILL - AUTOGRAPH FRANKED LETTER; Recently discovered 16 Jan. 1834 EL (toned central file fold but complete) addressed and franked by the newly elected M.P. "Robert Wallace" to an Edinburgh solicitor with "GREENOCK" & Edinburgh backstamps; being an autograph signed letter ref. a legal dispute, but with a most intriguing P.S.; "Be sure to let me hear the result of the first public attempt with the steam carriages, whether for experiment or hire." EMBOSSED COAT-OF-ARMS DESIGN; Attractive c.1839 oval design (75 x 60 mm) heavily embossed on card (minor rust marks) in two colours design in red & black, cut to oval shape; compound printed and almost certainly Whiting's work. Fancy uncoloured central lion-and-unicorn motif with "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" shield, plus gartered "DIEU ET MON DROIT" at foot, surrounded by crimson ground within white/red/black/white.black outer ovals. We do not re call having seen this exact design before, but it is very reminiscent of Whiting's embossed work included in the 1839/40 'Robert Wallace Papers' and elsewhere. Further research required. 846 APRIL 1840 P.O. CLAIM FOR 2s-6d FOR "COMPOSITION FOR STAMPING LETTERS" QUERY LETTER; Remarkable 1/5 July 1840 official P.O. From the Post-Office of [Spittal]"; there is a mostly fine "SPITTAL/+" Skeleton d.s. on the top flap. The letter lists two items of expenditure at this country P.O. to be sanctioned by the London top brass; "April 30, [to] Marshall & Co. [for] Composition [i.e. ink] for stamping letters....2s-6d" plus 5s/- for "2 New Letter Bags" on 2 May 1840. The filing notes show that cancellation ink was not normally allowable; "The claim for stamping composition on this Account being an unusual allowance, is humbly submitted for the Secretary's consideration..." Rare contemporary account for Maltese Cross ink dating from 30 April 1840. PHOTO. £150
