758 EARLY PRESTAMP LETTER SENT TO ENGLAND; 31 May 1790 EL [from the Crichton Correspondence - see Hong Kong Treaty Ports section earlier in this catalogue] from "St. Helena" (folds neatly to show heading alongside address-panel) to London endorsed "Per fav[ou]r Mr. Maginnis, Q.D.C." but posted on arrival in London and charged "10" inland rate to Dumfries. The letter (ref. the writer's return from Bencoolen - Sumatra - via India) notes that it the writer embraced "the opportunity of the 'Berrington', Indiaman, who sails from this Island this evening for England". 18th century letters from St. Helena are seldom seen. Plus the subsequent letter from this correspondence, written after the writer's arrival back in London, which reveals that the first letter was accidentally not sent by the Berrington, but was left on the writer's ship all the way back! ("...[I was] informed by Mr. Bromley our Purser that my letters with several of his were unfortunately left behind in the ship...") (2 covers). PHOTO. £300
759 EARLY LETTER TO G.B. VIA U.S.A. WITH "LONDON/SHIP LRE" MARK; 12 Apr. 1794 EL (2 sheets) from "St. Helena" to Dumfries [ex Crichton correspondence; see Hong Kong Treaty Ports lots above] endorsed "P. Paquet, Q.D.C." charged "1" then "1/3" and then "1/7" with a smudged "LONDON/SHIP LRE" on the front, with interesting contents; "...our ships are detained here for a length of time waiting for a Convoy from England; an opportunity which this evening occurred of an American Ship bound for Rhode Island may give a few lines the chance of reaching you before their [the Fleet's] arrival, as there are Packets despatched every month from thence [from USA]." The writer is en route back to China, where he has been appointed "Surgeon to the E. India Company's Factory at Canton in China" and from which he has just arrived but to which he is now to return! He has, however, made a profit of "£1,000" on this one voyage from China alone, so he does not mind the journey! Rare early letter from St. Helena. PHOTO. £400
760 EARLY LETTER TO G.B. WITH "LONDON/SHIP LRE" MARK; 20 May 1794 EL (some dusting to wrapper but fine contents) from "St. Helena" to Dumfries (ex Crichton correspondence) endorsed "Pr Bombay Castle" with two enclosures - letters to the writer's mother and brother (with interesting contents about his new lucrative appointment to Canton) - charged "1" then "1/7" with a mostly fine "LONDON/SHIP LRE" on the front. Both the enclosures are separately addressed but without postal marks. Plus similar 1 July 1794 letter (no wrapper) from "St. Helena" with further news, inc. mention of receiving a letter extracted from the packet bound for China; "Lord McCartney opened the China Paquet brought here by the Store Ship..." He complains about the lack of European women in China; "...wretched China laws which alas prohibit European Ladies from entering the Cities", and notes the large numbers of beautiful English girls in St. Helena! He ends noting that the letter is to go; "the Fleet are getting under way..." Good pair. (1 cover + 1 letter). PHOTO. £300
