"CANTON, CHINA" - EARLY LETTER TO G.B. WITH SCARCE OVAL "Ship Lre/[Crown]/WEYMOUTH"; Fine 12 Nov. 1804 EL from Crichton at "Canton, China" to his brother in Scotland charged "1/1" and then "1/5" with a partly fine scarce oval-framed "Ship Lre/WEYMOUTH" on the flap partly overstruck by the red London transit c.d.s. Interesting reading about the problems of sending mail TO China; he has not had letters from the family for two years, although his London Agents are happy to send mail to China direct, or via India, regularly. Exhibition Quality. PHOTO PLATE 16.. £300
"CANTON, CHINA" - EARLY LETTER SENT TO G.B. "BY THE FLEET"; New Year's Eve 1804/5 EL from Crichton in "Canton, China" to his mother in Scotland (originally with a present of a £660 Bill of Exchange!) sent (according to the Jan./Mar. 1805 letter; see next lot) "by the Fleet" (i.e. the East India Co. ships) and posted from London (10 Sept. 1805 backstamp), charged "1/-" as an inland letter; presumably forwarded by the writer's London East India Co. trader Agents. Fine early letter from Canton. PHOTO PLATE 16.. £200
"CANTON, CHINA" - EARLY LETTER TO G.B. ROUTED VIA U.S. WITH "PHILADELPHIA" AGENT MARK & OVAL "Ship Letter/[Crown]/DEAL"; 1 May 1805 EL (some toning) from Crichton at "Canton, China" to his brother in Scotland endorsed externally "Per London Packet via London", but addressed internally "P. American Ship Hera" and endorsed on flap "Received & forwarded by your obedt. Hble Servts, R. H. Wilcocks & Co., Philadelphia, 9 Novr. 1805", having a fine oval "Ship Letter/[Crown]/DEAL" on the front (London Sunday 8 Dec. 1805 backstamp) and charged "1/10" and then "2/8". Rare example of mail routed via the U.S., and apparently deliberately misleadingly endorsed (to avoid problems with French privateers??) via London though sent via the U.S. The writer asks for his next mail to go to St. Helena; "This letter is sent via America...you will receive it in Nov. or Dec., just as the St. Helena Store Ships are about to sail..." Rare thus and the final Crichton letter from China. PHOTO. £400
LONDON AGENTS' LETTERS OFFERING TO FORWARD MAIL TO CHINA, ETC.; 1803/06 ELs from Crichton's regular East India trade Forwarding Agents in London (all ex Arthur & Varnham except one from Beatt) offering to forward mail to China (Nov. 1803 & Jan. 1804) or giving latest news of Crichton's welfare in China (Apr./Sept. 1 805), and latest news about prospects of Crichton's return from China (Oct. 1805 & Aug. 1806). Four were posted inland from London to Crichton's brother in Scotland. Rare insight into the ways people sent mail to the Far East during the Napoleonic Wars period, entirely outwith the P.O. system. (6 covers). £100
BALANCE OF THE JAMES CRICHTON (1765-1823) - MERCHANT PRINCE OF CANTON & MACAO - CORRESPONDENCE; 1806-1821 file of letters (many with internal British postal marks; mileage marks, etc.) from the day on which he returned, a rich man, to England (1 Sept. 1806 EL headed "Ship Bombay Castle" with details of his voyage with the 17-ship Fleet via Macao, Malacca, P.O.W. Island & St. Helena, narrowly evading the French fleet!) through his dabbling in politics (news of electioneering in Nov. 1806 in London on behalf of the famous playwriter/politician "[J.B.] Sheridan!) and recuperation (at Margate & Cheltenham), to house/estate-building (at Friar's Carse near Dumfries) back in Scotland. Fascinating reading. (67 covers). £150
MACAO
"MACAO, CHINA" - VERY EARLY LETTER TO G.B. ROUTED "VIA AMERICA" DUE TO NAPOLEONIC WARS; 1 Aug. 1801 EL (no postal markings) from James Crichton at his summer residence at "Macao, China" to his mother in Scotland endorsed "P. [Ship] Lovely Lass via America" and sent in "my large Packet" via the US to avoid problems with the French Fleet. He mentions receiving news of the Battle of the Nile and the exploits of "the immortal Nelson". Pre-1830 covers from Macao are very rare; Webb (p. 292) notes that he had not recorded more than one pre-1832 letter from Macao and that was dated 1819! [The earliest Macao cover in Cavendish's 'Richard Chan' auctions was an ingoing cover of 1834.] The earliest Macao cover in this Crichton correspondence. PHOTO. £300
"MACAO, CHINA" - RARE EARLY LETTER TO G.B. WITH POSTAL MARKINGS AND LONDON FORWARDING AGENT'S ENDORSEMENT; 1 Aug. 1802 EL (minor faults) from James Crichton at "Macao, China" to his brother in Scotland endorsed "Forwarded p. Post from London 3 March 1803" [by the East India Co. Tea Inspectors Arthur, Larken & Co.] with London datestamp, charged "1/10" as a double inland letter, also endorsed "P [Ship] Canada" on the inner address; complete with the original enclosure, a duplicate of a 14 Jan. 1802 letter from Canton but with a "Macao 1st August" postscript. Good contents ref. an enclosed £1,000, and the availability of another £5,000 to buy land at any time! Rare; possibly the earliest known cover from Macao with postal markings of any kind; very few pre-1830 letters from Macao have been recorded (Webb had only seen one pre-1830 letter from Macao; dated 1814, and the earliest Macao cover in the Richard Chan Cavendish auctions was 1834). Important Exhibition Item. PHOTO. £500
"MACAO, CHINA" - RARE EARLY LETTER WITH POSTAL MARKS SENT BY SWEDISH SHIP TO G.B.; 8 Mar. 1803 EL from Crichton at "Macao, China" (duplicates of a 1 Aug. 1802 letter from Macao and a 5 Feb. 1803 letter from Canton, but with a final P.S. written at "Macao" on 8 Mar. 1803) to his brother in Scotland, apparently sent by a "Swedish ship" (quote from the Feb. 1803 letter in the previous lot but referring to this letter), concerning large profits remitted to England in recent months; posted as an inland letter in London (16 Dec. 1803 backstamp) charged "1/10" as a double letter. Rare; one of the earliest recorded covers from Macao with any kind of postal marks, and very rare being carried by a Swedish ship. PHOTO. £300
"MACAO" - EARLY LETTER TO G.B. CARRIED BY 'THE ATLAS'; 7 Apr. 1803 EL (corner fault) from Crichton at "Macao" with duplicate of 23 May 1802 letter from Canton; both to his brother in Scotland, with (May 1802) news of peace being notified by a Spanish Frigate from Manila and talk of Bonaparte! The 1803 update asks the addressee to forward "the enclosed letters", and is endorsed; "P [Ship] Atlas, Capt. Musgrave"; the final P.S. reads "The Atlas sails immediately for Europe." clearly forwarded by a London Agent; charged "1 Oz 1⁄4 4/7" inland rate with a London backstamp (16 Dec. 1803). Good early letter from Macao. PHOTO. £240
"MACAO, CHINA" - EARLY 2-RING "SHIP-LETTER/LONDON" C.D.S. COVER TO G.B. VIA INDIA; 31 Mar. - 10 Apr. 1803 EL from Crichton at "Macao, China" to his brother in Scotland with dreams of a wife and setting up a new home back near Dumfries; endorsed "P. [Ship] Alexander" on the front (although originally intended to go by 'Atlas' and then by 'Hercules'!), with mostly very fine large scarce 2-ring "SHIP-LETTER/LONDON" crowned c.d.s. on the front, charged "1/-" and then "3/9". Interesting P.S.; "As the Hercules sails in company with the Atlas, and having other letters...in the last, I divide the risk and send this P. Hercules, Capt. Scott, via Bombay". Fine and rare early letter from Macao. PHOTO. £300
"MACAO, CHINA" - LETTER REF. MURDERS, PIRATES, EARTHQUAKE, ETC.; 23 May 1804 letter (no address wrapper) from Crichton at "Macao, China" to his brother in Scotland endorsed at foot as having been sent "P [Ship] Rose of Boston", giving fascinating news of recent problems in China; they are "annoyed occasionally by Ladroons or Chinese Pirates on this coast; a few days ago they murdered two thousand inhabitants in one village near us. The earthquake was felt here lately, and in a Convent adjoining to my house, three Friars were struck dead by lightning at the Altar." Plus 9 Aug. 1804 letter from Crichton's London bankers to his brother in Scotland. (1 letter + 1 cover). £100
"ON BOARD A CHINESE BOAT IN OUR PASSAGE TO MACAO" - EARLY LETTER TO G.B. "P. MARIA CAROLINA"; 31 Jan. - 14 Mar. 1805 EL (minor wear) started at "Canton, China" in January but completed on the "River Bocca, Tigris" en route for Macao, from which tit was presumably finally sent; from Crichton to his mother in Scotland endorsed "p. [Ship] Maria Carolina" on the front, but posted as an ordinary inland letter from London (10 Oct. 1805 backstamp) and charged"2/-" double rate. Crichton notes (on 14 March) that he is completing the letter while at sea; "I am now writing to you on board a Chinese Boat in our passage to Macao" (where he went each year to spend the hot summer months when business was quiet at Canton). Rare thus. PHOTO. £300
VERY RARE 2-RING "BRITISH GOVERNMENT AGENCY OFFICE/MACAO" MARK ON PART COVER TO G.B. WITH INDIAN F.A.C.; Attractive 1843 front + top flap from Macao to Liverpool routed via a Calcutta Agent and "Via Marseilles" having a mostly very fine strike of the rare red 2-ring "BRITISH GOVERNMENT AGENCY OFFICE/MACAO" mark slightly overlapped by a fair boxed "CALCUTTA/SHIP LETTER/Bearing" mark, charged "2/3" with a v. fine red oval-framed "INDIA" alongside, but also having a fine rare black oval-framed "Ritchie Stewart & Co./Received [26/12/43]/Forwarded [1/1/44]/Bombay" Forwarding Agent's Cachet on the top flap. Very few examples of this rare 2-ring |Macao mark have been recorded, especially on overseas mail such as this; the 1844 example on an incoming cover ex Batavia in Cavendish's Mar. 2003 "Richard Chan" auction (lot 307) sold for £4,600. Rare in any condition and certainly exhibitable. PHOTO. £500
