GOLDEN AGE" COVER - 1st TRANS-PACIFIC MAIL CROSSING BY A STEAMER, VIA PANAMA; 22 Apr. 1854 "Duplicate" EL (worn folds and backed hole in address panel) posted from Sydney on 10 May (clear backstamp) endorsed "Golden Age" and franked by NSW 3d Green (margins in places) tied by fine dumb barred oval and charged "2/-" (British arrival charge for Packet from Pacific via Panama), with 18 July London transit backstamp, etc. Intriguing contents ref. insubordinate crew in Sydney Harbour being sorted out by the "Water Police" with a free hand, etc. Rare cover carried on the first specifically mail-carrying Steamer to cross the Pacific from Australia (see Tabeart, p.267). This experimental Trans-Pacific sailing was a financial disaster, and mail was not carried across the Pacific by steamer again until 1866! Few known. PHOTO. £200
