OUTER HEBRIDES & ST. KILDA
1942 VERY EARLY (PRE-POST OFFICE) "FLOAT MAIL" COVER SENT TO LONDON BUT WASHED UP IN NORWAY; Battered stampless 28 June 1899 envelope (with damp-affected contents headed "St. Kilda, N.B.") to London endorsed "1d for stamp" by sender (presumably the 1d was sent separately inside the 'mail-boat' plank, but kept by the finder) on the front and "Found driving on the sea in a plank, north of Haugesund, Norway" on the back, and so having a purple "[BRITISH VICE]-CONSULATE/[Arms]/HAUGESUND" cachet on the front and a matching Consular red wax seal on the reverse. Clearly the finder took the letter to the nearest British consular office. The letter was then handed to the "HAUGESUND" P.O. (v. fine c.d.s. on front) with matching "T", and has British "FOUND OPEN AND OFFICIALLY SEALED" labels with Newcastle on Tyne c.d.s.'s around the edges. From Newcastle is was sent on to London with a "5D/545" Postage Due mark. The letter talks of living on the island and the slender chance of this letter ever getting to its addressee. It is significant that the first St. Kilda P.O. was opened a year later in June 1900. Rare example of a pre-Post Office 'mailboat' letter from the island. [Ex Ecosse.] PHOTO. £500
