1325 IRISH ARTISTS CORRESPOND USING THE MULREADY STATIONERY; Unusual 25 June 1840 usage of the 1d Black Mulready letter-sheet (Stereo A47; scarce substituted stereo from forme 1; some dusting) from London to Dublin with fine orange-red Maltese Cross cancel. The letter is written and signed by the Irish artist Richard Rothwell (DNB biog. included; some of his portraits are in the London National Gallery) to his co-member of the "Royal H[ibernian]. Academy", Thomas J. Mulvany (DNB biog. included). Although Mulready was born in Ireland (and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Hibernian RA in 1860) he moved to London as a young child. It is believed that only one other 7th May usage has the datestamp struck on the address panel (one being with a feint "HULL" c.d.s., the other also being in this auction).). MASON "ASSESSED TAXES" CARICATURE USED FROM NEWCASTLE; 19 Aug. 1840 usage to London of this very rare Caricature in fine condition but with the original 1d Black neatly replaced by a fine 4m Plate 1a 1d Black (NC) seemingly (but not) tied by a fine red Maltese Cross, having a v. fine blue-green "NEWCASTLE on TYNE" c.d.s. on the lower flap. One of only 5 complete used examples (of which at least two were prepaid in cash not with 1d Blacks) of this amusing caricature recorded by Bodily, Jarvis & Hahn (this is the actual example they record from a poor illustration in the Sept. 1972 PJGB). Three wide to large margins, cut into at lower left, the "E" square is a little rubbed. Two filing creases, one crosses the adhesive and one crosses the clearly struck d.s. on reverse. The adhesive is well tied by a crisp red MC with "T.P./Cornhill" struck (inverted) in the same colour nearby. This cover is listed in the Jackson census as being lot 530 in the Stanley Gibbons sale of 28 June 1974 realising £100.
