1060 UNIQUE(?) STRAITS SETTLEMENTS QV 30c DISALLOWED ON COVER WITH CANCELLED POSTAGE DUE; Remarkable 6 Dec. 1876 env. (two pin-holes clear of stamp) addressed to "Medical Director General, Admiralty, Whitehall, London" and endorsed "Private" but franked by uncancelled Straits Settlements 1872-79 30c Claret (SG17; surface fault but clearly belongs). There is a mostly fine black "HONG KONG/A/DE6/76" despatch c.d.s. on the flap (along with Jan. 1877 London arrival c.d.s.'s) and a small blue crayon "1" on the front (presumably the Hong Kong PO's claim for 1d from the Postage Due to be collected) with the unpaid "1/2" charge in black ink. On arrival in London, the official status of the addressee was noticed and so the "1" was cancelled in ink, and - most exceptionally - the "1/2" charge was cancelled with two 'coiled spring' marks of London; this was authorised with a v. fine red "OFFICIAL PAID/LONDON S.W." c.d.s.
