1961 BIRMINGHAM - THE RARE HOODED REGISTERED CDS: 1910 (10 Dec) A large Midland Railway Carriage & Coach Co. env registered from Birmingham to Stour bridge bearing a single 3d tied by a good example of the rare "REGISTERED/BIRMINGHAM" hooded c.d.s. with another strike struck on reverse. Cover faults. Also a 1921 fragment with a similar c.d.s. These are the only examples of this c.d.s. we have seen. PHOTO PLATE 27 £100

1963 KIRBYMOORSIDE - PRESTAMP, 1d BLACK COVER, UDCs, & GROUP OF FINE POST OFFICE PPCs, ETC.; 1789-1925 covers/cards inc. 1789 "PICKERING", group of scarce Prestamp Kirby marks, tied near-4 margin 1d Black cover ex Stockton to Kirby, 1837-50 mostly very fine large "KIRBY-MOORSIDE" UDCs (4 black - one with FILEY UDC - and 2 blue), and a marvellous group of local PPCs of Post Offices (10) and a Postman, mostly matched with rubber/thimble cancellations of the relevant POs (one a UDC, one a PP label, etc.) on separate items. (opened out for display; with original contents) from Pickering to Kirby endorsed "Per Rail Carriage Paid" and having a rare "NORTH EAST RAILWAY/CARRIAGE PAID..." label (closed tears due to, opening) across the top edge of the cover; Plus even rarer Mar. 1921 env. (opened out for display; with contents) from "Sinnington" to Kirby endorsed "URGENT - Per 10.7 am Pasr. Train" on the front, franked by rare black-on-white 5d + 6d "N.E.R./PARCEL STAMP" (both affected by opening tears but attractive) on the reverse - both cancelled (one tied) by v. fine blue "SINNINGTON/17 MAR 1921" marks. ** 1967 FINE AND RARE FIRST-TYPE 'ISLE OF MAN' MARK: c1770 EL, probably ex Douglas, (light surface dustiness will clean up) to a Captain Baldwin at 'Gibson Coats near Clitro Lancashire' (text refers to salvage from shipwreck) with mostly very fine strike of the large first type straight-line ISLE OF MAN [IM 1]('M' partly uninked; recorded 1767-81 only); address panel with deleted '2' (packet rate) plus '6'[d] final charge via Whitehaven. ** 1968 RARE USE OF BLUE 'HORSESHOE' MARK ON MAIL TO DENMARK: 1802 EL to Denmark with very fine and very rare strike in blue of the 'horseshoe' ISLE OF MAN [IM 3; only recorded 1796-1802 in this unusual colour] mark slightly overstruck by London PAID d.s.: endorsed 'Paid 4/10'. London circular 'FOREIGN/40/ OFFICE' in red on reverse. Most attractive and rare on overseas mail. PHOTO £400

** 1970 RARE STRAIGHT-LINE 'ISLE OF MAN' ON REDIRECTED LETTER TO ROBERT STEVENSON: 1815 E ex Edinburgh to 'Robert Stevenson, Civil Engineer' at the Post Office, Douglas - endorsed 'not called for' and 'redirected' with rare, mostly very fine small s/l ISLE OF MAN [IM 7] alongside; various deleted charges etc - a busy cover! [Stevenson was on the Island in 1815 surveying for the building of the lighthouses at Point of Ayre & Calf of Man - completed in 1818] PHOTO £240
** 1971 EVASION OF POSTAGE, 1822: Lengthy letter ex 'Isle of Mann' [Dixon's Hotel, Douglas] to Todmorden posted at Liverpool and charged 8d; the letter contains an entertaining description of a seasick passage to the Island and adds details of how to send letters without paying the full postage: give it to one of the Coaches to be given to the Isle of Mann packet which sails about 9 o'clock...it brings the mail and [it] will probable come as well [as] through the Post Office. Interesting insight into the (unofficial) role of coaches in transporting mail! £120
** 1972 'FREE' MAIL EX ISLE OF MAN: 1829 E to London (repairable small tear on reverse) endorsed 'Isle of Man July Eighteen 1829' and signed 'Strathallan' with fine s/l ISLE OF MAN [IM 15]struck across the flap and crowned FREE cds - a rare example of free mail from the Island. PHOTO £240
