1915 RARE COMPULSORILY REGISTERED IN ERROR COVER - CONTAINED "PIECE OF STEEL, NOT COIN"!; Extraordinary 6 Nov. 1877 env. sent locally in London with 1d Red (corner fault) tied by London WC duplex, but also having red oval "REGISTERED/LONDON" marks on the front and a large manuscript "8" charge for compulsory registration of (supposedly) an enclosed coin, with relevant "CAUTION...[Coin]" label on reverse. However, the address "Refused" the letter and charge, so the letter also has part red wax seals of the "RETURNED LETTER BRANCH/LONDON G.P.O." over th flap and label, at which point the mistake was realised, the 8d charge and the Caution label cancelled, and the address side endorsed "Piece of Steel" and "Not Coin"! "BEEHIVE" VALENTINE; Fine "1826" (in manuscript, with matching poem inside) Beehive Valentine (no address and unfolded) having "DOBBS LONDON" imprint in embossed frame, but with superb floral coloured centre-piece (signed "Anna Blacker" at foot) cut to form a beehive (still working; care, please!) which lifts to reveal a pair of love-birds in a cage. 1923 A VERY RARE BROADSHEET PETITION ADDRESSED TO EDMUND PRIDEAUX FROM THE POSTMASTERS OF VARIOUS POSTAL ROADS REQUESTING STANDARD CONTRACTS - THE ONLY EXAMPLE IN PRIVATE HANDS:1653 (30 March) A printed broadsheet petition (11" x 15") from the postmasters of the Plymouth & Portsmouth, Bristol & South Wales Chester and Northern roads to Edmund Prideaux requesting standard contracts and guarantees relating to those persons charged with the delivery of the mails - supported by 18 postmaster (all listed on the document). This is the first and only edition produced of this broadsheet with circular woodcut arms of England and Ireland . Printed off centre at foot of sheet, uncut except for section of blank margin excised along one edge. A few old folds but in an excellent state of preservation for such a document. 1932 FALMOUTH FORWARDING AGENTS - PRESTAMP MAIL TO PORTUGAL; Nov. 1766 EL (faults and internal losses) from London to "Joseph Banks" (the naturalist?) at Lisbon endorsed "to be sent by the first Packet, Falmouth" with "200 [reis]" arrival charge; 1827 EL from Mexico (Real de Catorce) posted from Falmouth (sent c/o "Thomas Rogers, Penryn or Falmouth") to Lisbon charged "350" and prepaid 1s-7d; and 1824/33 pair each prepaid 1s-7d from London to Oporto, via "W. & E.C. Carne" or "Banfield & Lake" both of Falmouth. Scarce group. (4 covers). £120

1933 INTERNAL DEVON G.W.R. RAIL PARCEL COVER - HEMYOCK TO COLLUMPTON; c.1885 stampless env. endorsed "Immediate Delivery" on the front and having a large black & white printed "Great Western Railway/HEMYOCK to [Collumpton]" rail parcel label (torn when opened but still attractive and complete) on the reverse with charges noted as "Paid". Rare thus; these Rail Parcel Letters predated the 1891 Railway Letter Stamp system and were used where rail timetables were quicker than the post. PHOTO £100
1934 PLYMOUTH - RARE OUTGOING COVER TO PORTUGAL DURING THE 'FALMOUTH PACKET MUTINY'; Remarkable 9/11 Jan. 1811 EL (2 large sheets) from "London" to Lisbon, but sent under cover to "Widow Symons & Son in Plymouth" (Forwarding Agent's endorsement - in Portuguese - on flap), having a mostly fine "[PL]YMOUTH/11JA11/1811/218" c.d.s. (filing fold) on the front and prepaid the high "11⁄2" ounce rate of "10/-". This is one of only a handful of Packet Letters recorded during the 'Falmouth Mutiny' period (Nov. 1810 - Jan. 1811) that was routed via Plymouth. Even though it was posted in the port of departure, the full inland rate of 2s-11d was still charged as if it had been sent from Falmouth (as it should have been, had there not been a Mutiny - or strike - there)! 1935 RARE BOXED "PACKET LETTER/PLYMOUTH" ON COVER ROUTED "VIA LISBON" TO G.B.; 7/23 Nov. 1812 E (origin unknown; scruffily written reply to the original letter inside) endorsed "Via Lisbon" to Leicester having a very fine British Consular "LISBON" and a partly fine rare boxed black "PACKET LETTER/PLYMOUTH" (Rob.P1 - 1811-15 only - light crease) nicely placed on the front and charged "5/-" and then "5/2". There is a Forwarding Agent's endorsement on the flap; "Forwarded by Seabys & Goodall, Lisbon". This first Plymouth Packet Letter mark is seldom seen, especially on "LISBON" covers; the Packet ship may have been driven into Plymouth by bad weather on this occasion.PHOTO £160

EL from Lichfield to the Bishop Lichfield and Coventry (in London at the time) initially charged '3' in m/s but cancelled (as the Bishop, being a member of the House of Lords, was entitled to free postage), 1732 E from the Dean of Lichfield to a barrister in London charged '1/4' in m/s with a faint but clear two line "LITCH·/FEILD" (sic) mark, 1732 large part E addressed to Lichfield with no postal markings but endorsed in m/s 'Post Paid to Burton' and 1746 EL to London with two line "LICH/FIELD". 1957 LEWES - UNRECORDED "LEWIS/50" BOXED MILEAGE ERROR + SANSERIF "LEWIS" C.D.S. ERROR; Extraordinary 25 May & 20 June 1801 pair of fine ELs to the same Bristol address each with very fine Lewes boxed mileages, but the first with an unrecorded "LEWIS/50" error of spelling, the other being the normal SX805 (earliest recorded date); this error must only have been in use for a few weeks, because no English boxed mileages appear to have been recorded prior to May 1801. Superb quality for such a rare pair. Plus similarly matched pair of 1853 1d pink env. usages from Halesworth to Lewes having very fine strikes of brown c.d.s.'s with different spellings; "LEWIS" Error (23 July) and "LEWES" (1 Oct.) - again the error must have soon been corrected.
