1726 A VERY SCARCE PRE CATALOGUE ISSUE DATE USAGE ON COVER TO CANADA OF THE 4d MEDIUM GARTER WATERMARK ON HIGHLY GLAZED BLUED PAPER: 1856 (22 February) E (part of flap missing) from London to Montreal bearing Medium Garter watermark 4d carmine pair (lower left corner missing) on thick glazed blued paper tied by London numeral cancellation, m/s "1" below. The cover is backstamped with a London "HY/FE-22/1856" c.d.s. partially overstruck with a "MONTREAL/UC" c.d.s. of 11 March 1856. Two vertical creases, one of which passes through the centre perforations of the pair. The accompanying BPA Cert (1977) states "appears to be genuine but cannot be certified as postal markings associated with this rate are missing". We disagree with this statement. The 8d rate to Canada via New York was correct from 23 March 1854 until 31 December 1867 (there was no other 8d rate at this date to Canada). The cover probably left via the Cunard liner S.S. Asia from Liverpool (23 February) arriving New York (8 March) in time for it to arrive in Montreal on 11 March. The cover would have been carried as CLOSED MAIL from the UK through the USA to Canada and therefore would not have received any further transit marks. The adhesives (according to Dendy Marshall pub. 1926) were printed on blued paper from 26 January until 4 February 1856 - making the 22nd February date of this cover highly possible and thus predating the Catalogued issue date of 25th February 1856 by three days.
