The env is cancelled with three strikes of the "TRAVELLING POST OFFICE/S.P.S." bilingual c.d.s., transit c.d.s. of "HALFA", "CAIRE", "SEA POST OFFICE" & "CHAUBATTIA/ALMORA" plus an arrival c.d.s of "BAREILLY". The cover has one damaged flap & is slightly split along one fold. The message was written 8 days prior to the battle of Atbara. The writer Lieut. N.A. Thomson was a Seaforth highlander OC of an artillery battery of Krupp guns. It is Hass's theory that the 4m surcharge was produced as a short lived measure to prepay the soldiers' rate (1d = 4m), which was being over paid at 5m due to the lack of a 4m stamp.
