1504 5m LETTER ENVELOPE WITH CONTENTS FROM ATBARA RIVER TO INDIA:1898 (30 March) 5m type III stationery letter env. uprated with a single 5m provisional stamp used from Atbara River to a member of the Seaforth Highlanders at Bareilly, India. The env is cancelled with three strikes of the "TRAVELLING POST OFFICE/S.P.S." bilingual c.d.s., transit c.d.s. of "HALFA", "CAIRE", "SEA POST OFFICE" & "CHAUBATTIA/ALMORA" plus an arrival c.d.s of "BAREILLY". The cover has one damaged flap & is slightly split along one fold. The message was written 8 days prior to the battle of Atbara. The writer Lieut. N.A. Thomson was a Seaforth highlander OC of an artillery battery of Krupp guns. He was one of eight British officers wounded in action at Atbara.5m letter sheets uprated by provisional stamps are quite scarce, the 1pi letter sheet having been used most often. PHOTO £160

1514 4 Milliemes in blue on 5m rose carmine type V with part "HALFA" c.d.s. It is believe that approximately ten examples of this adhesive are recorded., all having been used at Halfa in July 1897. It is Hass's theory that the 4m surcharge was produced as a short lived measure to prepay the soldiers' rate (1d = 4m), which was being over paid at 5m due to the lack of a 4m stamp. The same metal die was used to surcharge the 1899 4m on 5m provisional postal cards. Uncatalogued in SG. PHOTO £240
