545 IMPRISONED GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG - RARE INGOING MAIL TO HIM IN TAIWAN CAMP; Remarkable pair of Aug./Sept. 1943 envs. ex Governor Young's wife in South Africa each headed "P.O.W. Post" and stamped, both having Japanese POW chops, and with Japanese manuscript camp routing markings. Sir Mark Young was famous in Hong Kong for not giving in to Japanese demands and for his refusal to give up until he was made a prisoner; he was eventually released at Mukden in Aug. 1945. (+ original contents; long message on fine printed coloured pictorial Xmas card) from a Canadian in the Hong Kong Defence Force when the Japanese invaded on Xmas Day 1941) to Canada with HK 5c+15c tied by fair c.d.s.; it had not left HK before the invasion so it was held there for almost 4 years and a has a very fine (rare for this mark) black boxed "DETAINED IN HONG KONG/BY JAPANESE/FROM DECEMBER 1941 TO SEPTEMBER 1945" on the front, also having a 25 Sept. 1945 "2nd BATTALION/Winnipeg Grenadiers" d.s. on the reverse.
