196 AN AIR LETTER THAT TRAVELLED NEARLY 50,000 MILES: 1982 (24 May) Air Letter from a Ghurka on the QE2 with "FIELD POST OFFICE/941" c.d.s. to Hong Kong where it could not be delivered. The cover was backstamped at the B.F.P.O. Hong Kong and returned to sender, it reached the Falkland Islands and was struck with the FPO 141 c.d.s. of 2nd July. However by this date the Ghurka had returned to UK so the letter was returned to Crookham. A most interesting item. PHOTO £100

199 COVER FROM A VULCAN BOMBER CREWE MEMBER DETAINED IN BRAZIL:1982 env from Rio De Janeiro to Lincoln from the captain of a Vulcan bomber (Sqd. Leader McDougall) to Lincoln with m/s "Certified OFFICIAL" and the fancy cachet of the british consulate. A Vulcan bomber was on a mission from Ascension to bomb Argentine radar at Port Stanley, on its return due to damage it was forced to land in Brazil. The crew were detained for 10 days. RHODESIA; Dec. 1940/Jan. 1941 trio regd. to Delhi (redirected), Manchester (address partly erased but with "GOLD COAST RIFLE ASSOCIATION" flap) & Bulawayo with KUT frankings all tied by mostly fine to v. fine strikes of the rare purple rubber "E.A.A.P.S./BASE/REGISTERED" d.s. with "NAIROBI" removed from the centre (only recorded for 4 weeks); amusingly the security was compromised for the 7 Jan. 1941 env. because it has a v. fine double-boxed "R/ARMY POSTAL SERVICES/NAIROBI" mark on the front! ARMY POSTAL SERVICE" C.D.S.'s; Fine 17 Sept. 1940 stampless OAS env. to Nairobi with smaller 2-ring "PS EAF" c.d.s. on back having v. fine purple "O C Kenya Independent/Squadron" cachet on the front (this group was based at Isiola and is thought to have been the smallest fighting force in the British Empire, being only 18 strong!!); plus 1940-3 covers all with mostly v. fine larger "E.A.
