FALMOUTH - RARE EARLY FORERUNNER SHIP LETTER: 1713 (23 Oct.) EL ex Madeira to London initially rated at 1d (ship letter charge introduced on 1st June 1711), subsequently amended to 5d by "NB" to include the 4d inland charge for over 80 miles with interesting contents including "This is going by a small vessel belonging to Falmo (sic) & returns", the grain trade, wine & fish trade with the Americas and the safe arrival at Lisbon of a convoy from Brazil. | 744 | FALMOUTH - DOUBLE LINE SHIP LETTER HANDSTAMP: 1778 EL with double-line Ship Letter h.s. type 1b (narrow "A") "FALMOUTH/SHIP LRE" ex Kingston, Jamaica to London, being a copy letter reading "This or the purport of this you have received already by the Grantham Pacquete Capth Bull" together with news updates "John Jackson Esqr. arrived in the Ship Golden Grove Captn. | 745 | FALMOUTH - OVAL SHIP LETTER HANDSTAMP: 1809 (16 March) EL ex Cadiz to Manchester with oval "SHIP LETTER/(Crown)/FALMOUTH" (type 2b with pointed crown), rated "1/1" in manuscript. Commercial correspondence with contents including "My last to you was the 6th Inst pr a Brig of War for Falmouth...Within these three weeks back a Person might as well have offered Stones for sale as woollen cloths.....We have now 7 or 8 Sail of the Line British in the Bay and three of them 3 deckers" PHOTO. | £120 | ||||||||||||||||||
FALMOUTH - OVAL SHIP LETTER HANDSTAMP: 1809 (21 Jan.) EL ex Philadelphia to London with oval type 2a "SHIP LETTER/(crown)/FALMOUTH" (applied upside down), rated "1/3" in manuscript & additionally inscribed "Ship Pacific". Note: The contents refer to the sale of land to repay a debt. It contains a copy of a communication on the same subject originally sent on 28th October 1808. According to the regulations an enclosure should have attracted double rate postage but the authorities appear to have been unaware of the additional contents. PHOTO. | £100 | ||||||||||||||||||
FALMOUTH - RARE POST PAID WITHDRAWN SHIP LETTER MARK: 1815 (April) EL ex London to Madeira via Falmouth with large red circular "POST PAID WITHDRAWN SHIP LETTER" mark & "p HMS Warrior" & "Pd 7" manuscript endorsements. Note: A scheme was introduced in October 1814 where a writer could take a letter to the Post Office, pay one third of the packet rate & then receive the letter back stamped accordingly to forward legally by any ship of the writer's choice. This scheme was unpopular & abandoned the following August. Evasion was rife and as a result, covers bearing evidence of official handling are extremely scarce. Just four examples of the Falmouth handstamp are known. PHOTO. | £300 | ||||||||||||||||||
FALMOUTH - RED "INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH" ON EL EX CALCUTTA TO SHROPSHIRE: 1819 (12 July) EL ex Calcutta to Shrewsbury "pr Triumph", endorsed "1/5" in m/s and with boxed red "INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH" & black circular double-circle "CALCUTTA/POST NOT PAID". Note: On 12th July 1819, a special landing charge of 4d was introduced for letters arriving from India, which was half the usual ship letter rate. This entire must therefore have been one of the first letters to enter Britain under the new regulations. To distinguish Indian correspondence from other overseas mail, special handstamps were progressively issued to ports. The colour of this early Falmouth impression is worthy of note. It was previously thought that initially the port used only black ink and that red did not make an appearance until 1826. PHOTO. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||
FALMOUTH - BLACK IRREGULAR TYPE 1a BOXED INDIA LETTER MARK: 1824 (March) EL ex Hyderabad to Devon thence forwarded to Launceston with black boxed "INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH" (type 1a - irregular frame) & similar "MISSENT TO/LONDON" in conjunction with "MADRAS/GPO/3 MR 3/1824/SHIP LETTER" . Note: This India Letter stamp is something of an enigma - recorded only in 1824 and is seldom seen. Why it should have been introduced is uncertain - it is believed that it may well have been a duplicate held in London to stamp letters that were not processed properly in Falmouth. PHOTO. | £160 | ||||||||||||||||||
FALMOUTH -BOXED RED "INDIA LETETR/FALMOUTH" IN CONJUNCTION WITH BOXED RED STEP-TYPE "FALMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" ON EL EX BATAVIA TO ABERDEEN: 1827 (May) EL ex Batavia to Aberdeen with "1/9" manuscript endorsement and examples of both the aforementioned boxed red Falmouth Maritime marks. This letter emanated at Batavia in the Dutch East Indies and did not hence qualify for the 4d India rate but was mistakenly stamped as an India Letter. The clerk realised his error and re-stamped the letter with a standard ship mark and applied the correct postage. PHOTO. | £120 | ||||||||||||||||||

FALMOUTH - CONSIGNEE'S LETTER: 1834 (November) EL ex Lima to London via Falmouth "P. Wm. Rushton" endorsed "Consignees of Property on Board" with step-type boxed red "FALMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" sent at the quintuple (5/-) rate. Note: Letters accompanying a consignment of goods were exempt from all ship letter charges but were subject to inland postage upon arrival except when addressed to the port at which they were landed. In such instances they were delivered totally free of charge. This practice was first enacted in 1710. Mail had to be endorsed "Consignee's letter" with the name of the ship, while the consignee's name had to appear on the ship's manifest and a declaration of consignees had to be made by the ship's captain upon entering port. | £120 | ||||||||||||||||||

ART. 13", double-ring circular ""ANGL./CALAIS", black arrival mark of Le Havre and the two aforementioned red boxed Falmouth Maritime marks. Note: In common with most South American countries, Brazil never qualified for the concessionary India Letter postage rate. The clerk at Falmouth applied the mark in error and so to remedy his faux-pas he overstruck the offending handstamp with the correct Ship Letter mark.PHOTO. | £150 | |||||||||||||||||||
