35 FALMOUTH PACKET MAIL - DIVERSION OF INCOMING MAIL TO IRELAND: 1840 (26 Oct.) EL per Packet "Skylark" from Havana to London with m/s "2/3"via Cove & Dublin. Due to adverse weather conditions the "Skylark" was forced to land at Cove. Bad weather and adverse winds occasionally forced homecoming Falmouth Packets to unload their mails at Irish ports (two-thirds of these were routed via the port of Cove). PHOTO. £300

49 SEVEN YEARS' WAR - RECAPTURE OF NEWFOUNDLAND FROM FRENCH FORCES: 1762 (12.October) Long EL(blank section removed) from a London merchant to San Stephano (Genoa) concerning shipping matters, particularly the problems of fruit imports caused by Spanish incursions into Portugal, discussion of an impending peace settlement, British Naval success at Havana and we have this day an Express of the Island of Newfoundland being retaken again & all the French Garrison at St. Johns made prisoners of War. 52 NAPOLEONIC WARS - EARLY BLUE-GREEN "LISBON/F" DATESTAMP OF FALMOUTH ON COVER EX ARMY IN SPAIN: 9-15 Dec., 1809 EL (inexpert 1960's 'repairs') addressed to Lismore, Ireland with mostly fine blue-green "LISBON/F" d.s. of Falmouth on the front; interesting contents (cross-written & lengthy) penned initially in 'Merida' but finishing after some days marching back across Spain towards frontier with Portugal inc. 'The Commander in Chief [Wellington] is here still'. £75
53 NAPOLEONIC WARS - SECOND BRITISH OCCUPATION OF GUADELOUPE: 1813 (28 May) fine EL (in French re the sugar trade) from Pointe a Pitre to London endorsed "[Per] Surinam Packet", having a mostly very fine & rare "loose-type" straight-line "GUADELOUPE" mark placed neatly on the lower flap. This mark was used during the second period of British Occupation of the island during the Napoleonic War period. Charged "2/2", the letter was redirected locally with a further 2d to pay. Mail from this period is rare. Ex Culford (Cavendish Nov. 2004 - realised £920), Martin Willcocks & Glassco. PHOTO. £500
54 CRIMEAN WAR - COVER TO THE UK. 1855 (Jan) env to Norwich franked with LC14 1d strip of the PJ-PL with two clear strikes of the "O*O" cancellation and red "POST OFFICE/BRITISH ARMY" c.d.s. on reverse. Some faults on reverse flap. PHOTO. £100
55 ABYSSINIAN FIELD FORCE - A VERY RARE COVER SENT AT THE 8A 8P RATE VIA MARSEILLES TO CARDIFF:1868 (21 May) env. from Sooloo "Via Marseilles" to Cardiff bearing India 1866 4a green pair and 1860 8p purple tied by m/s "Stamped" and three strikes of the "FF" in bars cancellation. The reverse has a clear "FIELD FORCE POST OFFICE/ABYSSINIA" c.d.s. of 21 May 1868 and "CARDIFF" arrival c.d.s. of 13 June 1868. With m/s note at left "1868/19=May Sooloo Abyfsinia/rec=19th June -". A very rare cover from this campaign. A section of the Army Post Corps was in operation from January to June 1868. The recorded covers are mostly endorsed with despatch notes. The 6th May and 21st May (this cover) are the only dates recorded for mail from Sooloo by Robson Lowe. PHOTO. £4000

The env to Darlington headed "On Active Service/No Stamps Available with m/s "6" and "6D" h.s. plus "PALAPYE" c.d.s., on reverse are transit "PALAPYE" (8 Dec), "VRYBURG" (18 Dec) & "DARLINGTON" (18 Jan) c.d.s. The contents are a moan regarding lack of mail plus "The Matabeli are licked there is no doubt about it, we raided some cattle the other day but they will not fight. Rhodes will not let us have a try at capturing Loben. I should like to make a bet we could do it, but the Chartered Coy don't want to".
