THE GERRY BULLOCK TRISTAN DA CUNHA
TYPE I CACHET ON COVER TO RAMSBOTTOM: 1917 (Dec.) envelope addressed to Mr. Richard Barlow, Ramsbottom, Nr. Manchester with a good example of the rare type I cachet in violet along with Fremantle transit of 9 January 1918, hexagonal "T/20" charge mark & unboxed "2D/466" Due mark applied on arrival at Liverpool. Manuscript endorsement on reverse reads "Received/March 8th 1918". This cover would have been carried from the island by the Norwegian Whaler "Trio" (which departed Tristan on 11 December) as far as Fremantle before being eventually transferred to the British Steamer "Calulu" which sailed from Melbourne (which suggests the cover must have gone overland at some stage). A little grubby but extremely scarce.PHOTO. £1000
TYPE II CACHETS IN CONJUNCTION WITH SOUTH GEORGIA TRANSIT MARK ON COVER TO DAWLISH: 1920 envelope containing a two page letter (headed "Tristan da Cunha/Feb. 8 1920) from Mrs. William Thomas Rogers, addressed to Percy Creaghe in Dawlish bearing G.B. 1⁄2d & 1d tied by a good example of the scarce type II cachet in dullish violet and with another example of same clear of adhesives adjacent to a South Georgia transit mark (type M1) of 4 June. The envelope would have left Tristan by way of the Whaler "Pentam" which called on 25 May. It would appear that the G.B. adhesives were added by Creaghe and it is his handwriting on the envelope. The letter mentions a parcel sent by Mr. Creaghe to Tristan and the islanders had heard that the Great War had come to an end.PHOTO. £750
TYPE II CACHET ON COVER TO DAWLISH: 1925 envelope with impressed "LARRINAGA & CO./LIMITED/LIVERPOOL" on flap, addressed to Dawlish with a good example of the scarce type II cachet in black. Backstamped "DURBAN/13 FEB. 25" which confirms that the cover was carried on the S.S. "Ramon de Larrinaga" which called at the island on 2nd February. A photograph of the "Ramon de Larrinaga" accompanies. PHOTO. £360
TYPE II CACHET IN CONJUNCTION WITH PORT ELIZABETH C.D.S. AND CAPE TOWN KILLER CANCELLATIONS ON COVER TO LAMBERHURST: 1926 envelope addressed to Mrs. Jose in Lamberhurst with a good example of the type II cachet in a dullish violet with two Cape Town Tax marks overstruck by "killer" cancellations & with Port Elizabeth c.d.s. of 3 May on reverse. This item would have been carried from the island by the Norwegian Barque "Asalea" which called at Tristan on 17 April. Pencil annotations on cover refer to Mrs. R.F. Glass and her (?) baby. Some damage to flap due to rough opening by recipient. PHOTO. £360
TYPE II CACHET ON LARGE PIECE OF A PARCEL FRONT BEARING G.B. 10d CANCELLED AT MONTEVIDEO: 1928 large piece of a parcel addressed to Bath with a good strike of the type II cachet in black with G.B. 10d cancelled at Montevideo (24 March) alongside. Bath arrival mark of 20 April and additional Montevideo transit mark to lower left. The parcel would have been carried from Tristan by the British ship "Author" which called in on 14 March. A remarkable item.PHOTO. £500
TYPE II CACHET ON COVER TO MANCHESTER: 1929 envelope ex the Rogerson correspondence addressed to Flixton, Lancashire with a good example of the type II cachet in black plus British "11⁄2d" charge mark and 1⁄2d & 1d Postage Dues (tied by Flixton c.d.s.). Backstamped with small "Telescopic sight" Examiner's mark. This item would have been carried on the S.S. "Halesius" which called at Tristan on 15 May. PHOTO. £360
TYPE III CACHET ON COVER TO LONDON: 1926 envelope in the hand of Robert Glass addressed to Martyn Rogers (U.S.P.G. Missionary on Tristan from 1922 to 1925) in London with a good example of the type III cachet in black plus two South African hexagonal Tax marks overstruck by Cape Town killer cancels to annul the erroneously levied charge. Carried from Tristan by the Norwegian Barque "Asalea" which called at Tristan on 17 April (Port Elizabeth backstamp of 3 May). Martyn Rogers died in May 1926 and would not have received the letter. PHOTO. £240
TYPE III CACHET ON COVER TO WARWICKSHIRE: 1929 envelope to Tamworth-in-Arden with a good example of the type III cachet in bluish-black alongside circular London Paquebot d.s. of 26 June & "11⁄2D/F.B." charge mark plus 1⁄2d & 1d Postage Dues, each tied by Tamworth-in-Arden c.d.s. of 27 June. Carried from the island by the S.S. "Halesius" which called at Tristan on 15 May. Reverse shows a fine example of the "Telescopic sight" Examiner's mark.PHOTO. £240
TYPE III CACHET ON EDGAR WESTON PHILATELIC COVER: c1929 philatelic cover addressed to Edgar Weston in London with an imperforate "gutter" pair of G.B. KGV ½d green postal stationery cut-outs tied by two strikes of the type III cachet in black. Weston sent a large quantity of prepaid mail to Tristan to obtain the local cachet. Few of these are known with transit marks and it is opined that the envelopes in question were probably not returned individually. Despite being cancelled by favour this is a most attractive item ("Weston" covers generally have better examples of the type III than commercial mail of the period). PHOTO. £100
TYPE IV CACHET WITH REVEREND ROBERT POOLEY'S MANUSCRIPT INITIALS ON COVER REDIRECTED FROM SOUTH AFRICA TO THE U.K.: 1928 envelope addressed to the Reverend A. Turner on H.M.S. "Birmingham" at Simonstown, subsequently forwarded to Streatham with a fine example of the type IV cachet in red containing manuscript "27.3/1928/R.P.(Robert Pooley)" alongside oval "T/1d" charge mark (effaced on arrival in the U.K.) & G.B. 11⁄2d adhesive tied by Greenwich arrival mark of 4 (?) December. A Simonstown c.d.s. of 15 November towards the foot of the cover indicates that this particular item was carried on the Baron Tweedsmouth" which called at Tristan on 28 October (eight months after Pooley had initialled it!). Note: No ship visited Tristan between the "Author" in March and the "Baron Tweedsmouth" in October. (see page 331 of "The History and Postal History of Tristan da Cunha" by George Crabb). PHOTO. £600
TYPE IVA CACHET - RARE USAGE IN CONJUNCTION WITH TYPE IV ON LONG ENVELOPE TO DURBAN: Spectacular 1928 or 1929 long brown envelope (vertical crease clear of marks) addressed to Percy Bishop in Durban bearing G.B. 1d & 2d adhesives tied by the type IV cachet in red and with a fine example of the rare type IVa cachet in red alongside. No other postal markings make it impossible to date the cover accurately or to establish on which ship it travelled. Note: The use of the type IVa "ISLAND OF" bandeau was restricted due to the difficulty in centering same within the type IV strike. PHOTO. £1000
TYPE V CACHET ON COVER TO ENGLAND: 1932 (Jan.) envelope to England bearing South African 1d & 2d defins. tied by Simonstown c.d.s. of 16 January with a rather smudged example of the type V cachet in blue to the left of the adhesives. This cover was carried from the island by H.M.S. "Carlisle" on its first visit to Tristan. The ink used for the cachet may well be pen ink indicating that it was applied by favour. As a result of redirection in the U.K. there is a slogan backstamp of the British Industries Fair on the reverse.Light foxing. £100
TYPE V CACHET ON COVER TO SUTTON COLDFIELD WITH BUENOS AIRES TRANSIT C.D.S.: 1930 philatelic cover addressed to Francis Field with a reasonable example of the type V cachet in violet tying G.B. 1⁄2d & 1d adhesives and with another strike of same alongside. Buenos Aires transit mark of 27 February indicates that it left the island on the "Tymeric" which called at Tristan on 2 February.PHOTO. £100
TYPE V CACHET ON COVER TO ROSE ROGERS IN LEICESTERSHIRE: c1930 envelope addressed to Mrs. Rose Rogers (author of "The Lonely Island" & husband of the U.S.P.G. missionary on Tristan in the early 1920's) at Hougton on the Hill with a good strike of the type V cachet in blue to the lower left hand corner. Lack of transit marks make it impossible to date the item. £75
"OFFSET" STRIKE OF THE RARE TYPE VA CACHET IN CONJUNCTION WITH TYPE II CACHET ON COVER TO AXMINSTER: Remarkable May 1929 envelope addressed to Axminster showing an "inverted" example of the rare type Va cachet (the result of an offset from the back of the next envelope stamped) in violet as well as a badly smudged example of the type II cachet in black. The envelope is endorsed "Mrs. Susan Swain" in manuscript and also shows London Paquebot mark & "11⁄2D" charge mark plus G.B. 1⁄2d & 1d Postage Dues. It left the island on the "Halesius" which called at Tristan on the 15th May. Type Va is extremely rare and this particular item is the only known example with this kind of offset strike. See page 196 of George Crabb's book "The History and Postal History of Tristan da Cunha". PHOTO. £3000
TYPE VA RUBBER STAMP AND INK PAD PLUS SUNDRY RELATED MATERIAL: Plastic box (non contemporary) containing the original type Va rubber stamp (with "A" of "DA" removed by George Crabb) and the original ink pad plus 9 strikes of the cachet in worn state (with "A" still present), 3 strikes of the cachet with "A" removed, four letters written from Mrs. Lindsay to Gerry Bullock between December 1975 and August 1976 (the time when the current vendor was negotiating purchase of the handstamp) together with an article on the type Va cachet by Gerry published in the "Philatelic Magazine" of July 1978 and a photograph of the author holding the rubber handstamp and ink pad. £400
FIRST TYPE MANUSCRIPT "TRISTAN DA CUNHA" ON COVER TO AXMINSTER: 1932 envelope to Mrs. Dent in Axminster with first-type three line manuscript "Tristan/da/Cunha" endorsement partially overstruck by London Paquebot mark of 27 April and with G.B. 1⁄2d & 1d Postage Due adhesives to the left of the London mark. The cover emanates from Frank Glass (two manuscript endorsements of same). The cover left the island on 14 Feb. by way of the M.V. "King William", a tramp steamer en route from Buenos Aires to Shanghai. Here letters were passed to the Royal Naval Mail Office on 6 April. They were then posted on to the U.K. via Siberia. Note: When the Reverend Partridge left Tristan on board the H.M.S. "Carlisle" in January 1932 he took the type V handstamp with him and until his return in May of that year on board the S.S. "Arizona Maru" the islanders had to make do without same. PHOTO. £360
TYPE V CACHET ON COVER TO LEEDS WITH HEXAGONAL SINGAPORE TAX MARK: 1933 (?) envelope to Leeds with a fine strike of the type V cachet in blue plus hexagonal Tax mark of Singapore with red crayon "45(c)" enclosed. Manuscript "March 22 1934" in green ink on reverse (most likely added by recipient - Arthur Bellamy) suggests that this cover could well have travelled on the French ship "Jeanne d'Arc" which called at Tristan in late 1933. Similar Tax marks can be found on mail carried on the "Ponape" which left Tristan in late 1934. PHOTO. £150
TYPE V CACHET ON COVER TO AXMINSTER WITH HEXAGONAL SINGAPORE TAX MARK: 1934 envelope to Axminster endorsed "Mrs Harry Swain" in manuscript with a fine example of the type V cachet in blue alongside hexagonal 45c charge mark (applied in Singapore) plus G.B. 1⁄2d & 1d Postage Due adhesives tied by Axminster circular datestamps and with (on reverse) Singapore transit mark in black of 24 September. This item must have travelled on the "Ponape" which visited the island during July & August of 1934. PHOTO. £150
SECOND-TYPE MANUSCRIPT "TRISTAN DA CUNHA" CACHET ON COVER TO KENT: 1934 (Jan.) opened out envelope (faults) to Lamberhurst with manuscript "TRISTAN/DA/CUNHA" in upper case above Cape Town Paquebot mark dated 24 February and with South African & British charge marks plus G.B. ½d & 1d Postage Dues tied by "LAMBERHURST/TUNBRIDGE WELLS" datestamp of 20 March. After the Reverend Partridge had removed the type V cachet from the island when he departed on the S.S. "Manilla Maru" on 28 May 1933 and before its return with the Reverend Wilde in February 1934 there was again a need for manuscript cachets to be implemented. PHOTO. £150
REAPPEARANCE OF TYPE V CACHET ON PPC OF THE "ATLANTIS" IN CONJUNCTION WITH OVAL SHIP'S CACHET IN VIOLET: 1934 (18 Feb.) PPC written on board the cruise ship "Atlantis" with interesting contents including "We are due at Tristan da Cunha tomorrow morning to land the Padre. ATLANTIS/19 FEB 1934/POSTED ON THE HIGH SEAS" cachet in violet.Note: The Padre in question was the Reverend Harold Wilde who had the type V cachet in his possession at the time!.This card is depicted on page 210 of George Crabb's book "The History and Postal History of Tristan da Cunha". A very unusual item which is illustrated on page 214 of Crabb's book. The origin of the cachet is uncertain but as it is used on a cover addressed to Mrs. Dent its authenticity seems unquestionable. PHOTO. £360
TYPE V CACHET ON COVER TO AXMINSTER: 1937 envelope endorsed "Mrs John Glass" in manuscript addressed to Mrs. Charlotte Dent in Axminster with two good strike of the type V cachet in black (one overstruck by G.B. 1⁄2d & 1d Postage Due adhesives). The cover received a "11⁄2D" charge mark on arrival at Southampton and this resulted in 1⁄2d (damaged) & 1d Postage Dues being added and cancelled by Barnet datestamps of 27 Feb. This cover was carried from the island by S.S. "Viceroy of India" and its main claim to fame is the use of the Cape Town Paquebot machine cancellation which is extremely scarce on mail emanating from Tristan. PHOTO. £100
TYPE VII CACHET ON S.S. "CARINTHIA" COVER TO NORTHERN IRELAND: 1939 (March) envelope with original contents addressed to Londonderry bearing GB 11⁄2d adhesive tierd by a fine example of the type VII cachet in violet and with violet boxed "POSTED ON BOARD/THE BRITISH/S.S. The enclosed letter is dated 23 April 1939 but apparently did not leave the island until the Norwegian Whaler "Lancing" put ashore in November 1939 en route for the Antarctic resulting in a gap of 11 months between writing and arriving at its destination. £120

The envelope has typed "AIRGRAPH/FOTOBRIEF" & "OFFICIAL FREE-OFFISIEEL VRY" and travelled by sea from the Naval base at Simonstown where the microfilm would have been developed. Incredibly rare - one of only a few recorded examples of such ingoing airgraphs. Illustrated on page 234 of George Crabb's book. PHOTO. £1000
WWII MAIL - SCARCE INBOUND FORCES AIR LETTER FROM EUROPE: 1945 (31 May) air letter written by Sergeant Joe Leary to his brother Danny at "H.M..S. "Zenith" (Travemunde, Germany). No censor markings as the letter was posted after the cessation of hostilities in Europe although the contents themselves are quite interesting and include "I'm still stuck up in the mountains with Tito's fellows among us. Interesting contents discuss how quiet the island had become with the withdrawal of troops and that the new Telegraphist (who had replaced Leary) was not at all liked! This item would have left Tristan on 20 February on board the merchantman "Empire Merganser". Slight cover damage due to rough opening but a remarkable item nevertheless. PHOTO. £500

"1½D/I.S./Q" mark and three ½d green Postage Due adhesives. Carried from the island on the "Pequena". Whilst postage due charges were seldom collected on mails ex Tristan da Cunha at the time it is probable that the adhesives were applied on Mr. Butler's insistence. £75
TYPE IX CACHET ON COVER TO LONDON: 1949 (Dec.) envelope to London with type IX cachet in violet, encircled "T", South African 1½d charge mark and Cape Town Paquebot marking of 15 December. Carried from the island by the "Pequena" and the date of the Paquebot mark is the same as the only known dated example (1 Dec.) of the type IX cachet. £75
TYPE IX CACHET - LATE USAGE ON COVER EX S.S. "CARONIA": 1950 (Feb.) cover with White Star Line crest on flap to London with a fair strike of the rectangular type IX cachet in violet and Cape Town Paquebot mark (22 Feb.) along with oval encircled "T" adjacent to large "!½d" charge mark. The cover was carried on the cruise ship "Caronia" which called on the island on 31 Jan. 1950 (the first cruise ship to visit the island after the cessation of hostilities in 1945). Light stain at South East corner but a fascinating item. £100

TYPE X CACHET - EARLY USAGE ON POSTCARD SENT BY THE ADMINISTRATOR TO CAPE TOWN: 1950 plain postcard written by Hugh Elliott to Allan Crawford in Cape Town with a superb strike of the violet oval type X cachet dated "13 MAR 1950" plus Cape Town Paquebot mark, encircled "T/1D" & South African 1d postage due adhesive. This item is believed to be the only type X item to have been carried on this particular visit of the Pequena to Tristan (lasting from 11th to 13th March.) The earliest known date for this cachet is 12th March but as the corresponding Paquebot mark on the item in question is 22 April it would appear that it could not have travelled on this sailing. A very important item. PHOTO. £150
TYPE X CACHET ON COVER FROM JOHN REPETTO TO ALLAN CRAWFORD IN CAPE TOWN: 1950 (June) envelope addressed to Allan Crawford in the Cape with violet oval type X cachet dated 11 June, Cape Town Paquebot mark of 26 June, encircled "T/"D" charge mark, rectangular boxed "POSTAGE NOT/COLLECTED" & two South African 2d postage due adhesives. This item travelled via the "Pequena" to Cape Town and thence to St. Helena.
