** 1225 INDIAN POSTCARD ADDRESSED TO QUEEN VICTORIA WITH CANCELLED POSTAGE DUE MARK; 7 May 1899 usage of the small internal Indian 1⁄4a brown Postal Stationery PC (very slight wear) written and addressed in Indian script (typed translation included; a sad plea for help from the Empress); cancelled by a fine 2-ring "MADANGANI" c.d.s., with a fine "T" in circle tax mark (beside blue crayon "71⁄2cts" charge) and v. fine (tho' oily) Aden/Bombay "SEA POST OFFICE/C" c.d.s. on the front. The address has been translated in blue crayon by the (London?) P.O.; "Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen of England & Empress of India, London", so the "1D/F.B./B" London charge-mark has been cancelled by a "Spring" mark, with a mostly fine red "LONDON S.W./POSTAGE/PAID" d.s. nearby. Remarkable example of the cancellation of a Postage Due charge on mail to Queen Victoria; presumably the item was classified as a Petition and therefore not liable to charge. Unique? The letter, in French, is gossipy and mentions that the writer had spent several days intimement avec Nelson, admiring his heroic temperament and being invited to stay with him in London - une fraternité d'armes comme les anciens Chevaliers.
