| 544 | VERY RARE HUME's No.3 'ELEPHANT' CARICATURE WITH UNUSED 1d RED; c.1841 Lawrie & Knight version (see imprint on reverse of address panel) of Hume's very rare (but very amusing) No.3 design depicting an elephant as "Regimental Post BOY" and "Jim Crow" order for 1,000 envelopes to be sent "per Balloon" on the front; plus snogging couple, naval cannon firing letters, "CATS ACADEMY" and Burke & Hare-like weighing of a letter containing a female cadaver on the four flaps! This example - no used example of the Lawrie & Knight version has been recorded - bears an uncancelled 1d Red (creased prior to use) and has an address (not contemporary?) in Gloucester with manuscript "Paid", but it is unsealed and so is offered here "as is".
