LINE & TWO LONDON "PACKET LETTER" MARKS; Attractive 25 Jan. 1839 EL (in French; first-hand account of the recent - 11 Jan. 1839 - Earthquake in Fort Royal) from "Fort Royal" to Paris "Par le Packett" with mostly very fine "MARTINIQUE" (closed seal tear) on the top flap, but also having both red and black London fine to v. fine framed "PACKET LETTER" (Ship Letter Office) and "Packet Letter" (Foreign Branch) marks on the front. The important contents give news of the quake; "...the Disaster which has turned Fort Royal...into a heap of ruins. Of the 800 houses that made up the town, 600 have been completely destroyed...In the cataclysm, 300 have been killed and a similar number injured, who are in general horribly maimed..." Plus unusual Oct. 1903 PPC to GB with v. fine Chinese P.O. WITH RARE BRISTOL "‡" MARK - CONTENTS MENTION OPIUM & POSSIBLE "DISTURBANCE"; 18 Jan. 1838 E (side-flaps removed) from "Canton" (filing note above address) to Dundee endorsed "Per [Ship] General "charged "1/11" with a mostly fine rare fancy Scottish Mail Tax "‡" mark of Bristol on the front and a fair step-type framed "SHIP LETTER/PLYMOUTH" on the top flap. The little contents that remain include tantalising references to trouble brewing prior to the 1st Opium War; "...if an Embassy is sent, let it avow its purpose & coldly carry it thro', demand justice, but as the law of Nations requires. The Chinese have always as yet been allowed to carry their point; they see us here without a single means of defense, not so much as a Man of War [=ship]stationed outside by which news of a disturbance could be carried elsewhere, & is it surprising they fancy themselves "Lords of the Universe"? Capt. Eliot, I told you before has left Canton...21st [Jan. 1838] Opium trade...I have often mentioned to you. At present there is a vessel lying at Whampoa...the Mandarins are making a great noise about it...they are punishing the poor unfortunate devil of a Pilot..." ONE LONDON OVAL F.A.C.; Nov. 1849 - June 1850 trio of stampless ELs (printed Prices Current contents) all from "Canton" to the same Boston firm, each endorsed twice - the first endorsements cancelled in transit in London by the Agents - firstly by "Overland", "Southampton" or "Overland via Marseilles" but with no charges for those journeys, then changed to the Transatlantic ships' names:- "Pr Europa", "P Str. Hibernia" and "P. Str. Cambria" . The latter being the only one with a London Agent's mark; v. fine double-oval "FORWARDED BY/GEORGE PEABODY/LONDON" on the top flap. Scarce lot. E ex Jamaica to London with two-line "DOVER/SHIP LRE", 1783 E ex Martha Brae to London with m/s "10" charge mark & faintish two-line Dover Ship Letter mark plus 1782-88 trio of ingoing packet letters ex London to Kingston/Spanish Town, all rated at 1/-, one endorsed "Pacquet". The 1782 EL has particularly interesting contents including "The Spanish Force at Hispaniola I think is not sufficient for an enterprise of magnitude; our Fleet at Windward is much superior to the French and there is recent intelligence that our Fleet was cruising off Martinica in order to intercept the Reinforcement expected from France; should we be so fortunate there will be an end of the enemies operations in those seas this year and in event of their escaping our Fleet and proceeding immediately to Hispaniola Sir George Rodney must have some account of it and I apprehend will follow them for the protection of Jamaica - if we eacape the present danger I believe the Island will be better taken off from hence in future". Grant, Chief Justice of Jamaica with a superb s/l "IAMAICA" mark slightly overstriking Bishop Mark plus 1782 ex Kingston to Bristol "By the Lord Hyde Pacquet" with a partial "IAMA[ICA]" mark on reverse & on obverse m/s "1N" deleted and amended to "1N4". 382 PACKET LETTERS FROM JAMAICA TO THE UNITED KINGDOM WITH STRAIGHT LINE "IAMAICA" MARKS: 1787-95 trio comprising 1787 EL ex Bath, Jamaica to Rothesay, Bute rated "1/-" and subsequently amended to "1/7d" to pay for the postage between London & Bute with a good s/l "IAMAICA" on reverse, 1791 EL from Kingston to Greenock marked "By Packet" rated "1/-" and subsequently amended to "1/11" to cover postage to Greenock and 1795 (17 January) EL ex Kingston to London with fascinating contents including "For 39 years I have been in this country , I never remember such mortality as we have experienced here within these eighteen months, such havoc amongst the young people, Seamen & Soldiers occasioned by that fatal yellow fever raging against us". 383 THE "FALMOUTH MUTINY" LETTER FROM JAMAICA: 1810 (Nov.) EL (toned crease clear of marks) from "Sav. La Mar" to London with a fair "JAMAICA" fleuron d.s. on reverse, charged "2/-". This letter reached Falmouth during the strike of Falmouth Packet seamen when the Packet ship that carried it - the "Duke of Kent" was diverted to Plymouth. Ex Swarbrick. £100
