24 REQUEST FOR A NURSEMAID: 1886 (6th June) 4pp Letter on monogrammed notepaper with matching envelope, written from Balmoral passing on the Queen's request that Lady Southampton should make inquiries about a nursemaid as Mama is so often asked by relations to recommend a nurse and she thinks she knows now of someone for whom she might later be asked to find one - this may be a coy reference to the fact that the Princess was herself pregnant by this date. 66 DEATH OF THE DUKE OF CLARENCE, 1892: Lady Southampton's copy of a quarto-size, black-bordered printed announcement of the death of her grandson, the Duke of Clarence - a controversial character, fiancÈ of Princess May of Teck (later Queen Mary) and rumoured to be involved in the 'Jack the Ripper' murders of 1888. His death enabled his brother, Prince George of Wales, to accede as George V in 1910. £140
