OATES, CAPTAIN LAURENCE: 1902 envelope endorsed "On Service No Stamps Available" ex APO at Harrismith addressed to the writer's mother containing a four page autograph letter written by Captain Laurence Oates of the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons during his second tour of duty in South Africa after recovering in England from severe wounds sustained in March 1901. Contents include "We had great fun the other night. We marched at 12 and at 2 in the morning came on a Boer convoy. We wounded and captured 22 and about 18 wagons and some Cape carts. Most of the Boers bolted at once, leaving their women and kids behind. They made an awful hullabaloo as we always leave them on the veldt.
