** 1399 RARE EARLY COVER RELATING TO THE LITTLE-KNOWN "HEARTS OF STEEL" REBELS OF 1772; 1772 (pencil note) E from "BANBRIDGE" (fair straight-line on the front) addressed "To The Commander in Chief of his Majestie's Forces, now in the North, Lurgan" without postal charge, presumably because the addressee was entitled to free mail, with the fascinating filing note "Petition of the Hearts of Steel to General Gisborne". Internet searches show that Major General Gisborne was indeed in charge of the British forces in Ireland in the 1770s, and the "Hearts of Steel" are recorded as having been a secretive revolutionary Society concerned with various areas of personal liberty in Ulster. One wonders what the Petition was that this wrapper enclosed, and where it might now be! The first item connected with any pre-1798 Irish rebels that we have seen. PHOTO. £150
