1299 EARLIEST RECORDED (?) SCOTTISH SHIP LETTER - "GREENOCK" + "SHIP" ON EARLY COVER EX U.S.A.; 1 Jan. 1761 EL (small closed tear clear of marks and some dusting) from "Charlestown, So[uth]. Carolina" to Edinburgh endorsed "Q.D.C." and charged "3", having a mostly fine handstruck "SHIP" on the front and matching (?) near fine small "GREENOCK" on the lower flap. Robertson & Tabeart quote a 1763 US cover as the earliest known Scottish Ship Letter (sold by Cavendish in the 22 Oct. 1999 'Ecosse' sale for £368), but this cover extends the period of use by a further two years. Interesting contents inc. "There's arrived hear [sic] this day from the North 1,500 regular troops, and marches in 14 days hence 130 miles in order to goin [sic] the Convencile Troops at the Congrezies."
