(?) on the front, having a very fine bright green "MEXICO" Fleuron on the top flap (CO418; slightly affected by filing notes, but still far clearer than usual); charged "3/6" in all. 1207 VERY FINE RED OCTAGON-FRAMED "Mifsent to/FALMOUTH" MARK ON PLYMOUTH COVER TO U.S. Attractive 7 Mar. 1839 EL from "PLYMOUTH" (v. fine c.d.s. on lower flap) to New York endorsed "P. first Packet from Portsmouth" and prepaid "P 1/-", but having a lovely strike of the rare boxed "Mifsent to/FALMOUTH." mark (light fold; seldom seen) nicely placed on the front, matching the c.d.s. on the lower flap. The m/s word "Portsmouth" has been re-emphasised in transit in Falmouth with two strikes in red of the top of the Missent mark as underlining. CORNWALL, DORSET & SOMERSET; Apr. 1567 Treasury Warrant (overall staining but sound) with full typed transcript, authorising payment at 2s-8d per day for the 30 days' journey to "Phillippe Conewaye, one of the Ordenarye Messengers of the quene's Maiestie's Chamber"; for taking letters from "London" to "Devonsheire to Sir John Chichester" as well as to "Cornewale to Richard Chamonde", to Dorset to "Sr Henry Assheley", and to Somerset to "Sr Maurice Barkeley". ** 1249 RARE EXPERIMENTAL 3d LATE FEE ON DOUBLE TRANSATLANTIC RATE COVER JUST PRIOR TO 'RETALIATORY RATES'; 6 May 1848 E to Philadelphia "p. Caledonia via Boston" franked by two 1/- embossed (both cut square; almost 4m - one creased, the other chipped at foot) and 1d Red Strip of Three (one creased; clear margins except along top) all tied/cancelled by mostly fine Liverpool "466" numerals; charged "22" (2c ship rate plus double 10c inland) on arrival. The 3d Late Fee is seldom seen especially prior to 1849; Moubray notes (pp.26-27) that Liverpool was the place where the 3d Late Fee was tried out in 1847/8, prior to its being adopted in 33 additional offices from 5 Jan. 1849. We cannot recall having seen a pre-1849 3d Late Fee cover before (but see also the next lot). Rare. PHOTO. £200
** 1250 VERY RARE 1st 'RETALIATORY RATE' SAILING COVER SENT WITH 'EXPERIMENTAL' 3d LATE FEE FRANKING; Spectacular 24 June 1848 E from Liverpool to Philadelphia "p. Caledonia via New York" franked by two cut-square 1/- Embossed (one with faults; margins in places) and 1d Reds (3;margins in places) all tied by "466" numerals, having the Retaliatory Rate charge of "58[c]" in blue manuscript alongside. Exceptionally rare; this is a First Day Cover of the Retaliatory Rates system (whereby this letter was treated as entirely unpaid by the U.S. P.O. and charged accordingly (c.f. the cash-paid cover illustrated in Moubray, p.235). It is also a rare example of the pre-1849 'Experimental' 3d Late Fee payment (see previous lot). Doubly rare! Unique?PHOTO. £400
** 1251 'RESTORED RATES PERIOD' - RARE EARLY 3d LATE FEE COVER TO U.S.A.; 27 Jan. 1849 E to New York "Pr Niagara" franked by cut-square 1/- Embossed (crease; near 4m) and Strip of Three 1d Reds (one creased; margins all round except along top) all tied by fine "466" numerals but also with the 1/- tied by a very fine red "12" charge-mark matching the "BOSTON" c.d.s. nearby, being the extra 2c Ship Letter rate as well as the 10c inland rate. There were only 4 outgoing sailings with mail charged in this way during the 'Restored Rates' period (see Moubray pp.235-7). This is also a 1st-month usage of the Official Provincial 3d Late Fee rate (see Moubray pp.26-7). Doubly rare! PHOTO. £240

C.D.S. & BLACK "5/CENTS" STRUCK IN ERROR SO CANCELLED; 23 Oct. 1852 EL to New York endorsed "Paid Late" and "[Per S.S.] Africa" franked by 1/- green Embossed Pair (cut square; above average margins:- 1/- postage + 1/- Late Fee) tied by light "466" numerals matching the black "LIVERPOOL/F[loating] R[eceiving] H[ouse]" c.d.s. on the top flap; in addition there is a v. fine BLACK "5/CENTS" Accountancy Mark struck in Error and cancelled by a further "466" numeral with the very fine correct RED "5/CENTS" mark struck instead alongside. ** 1256 RARE "SHORT PAID" COVER TO U.S. VIA QUEENSTOWN; Unusual 1 Dec. 1860 E to New York "p. Europa via Queenstown" franked incorrectly with a 6d lilac (wing m.) and 1/- green (crease) both tied by v. fine "466" numerals, but endorsed in red "Over ‡oz" and "Short Paid", and so charged as if unpaid in spite of the 1s-6d payment instead of the correct 2/- rate. HANDSTRUCK "3/-" CHARGE-MARK ON COVER EX HAITI TO LONDON; Fine unpaid 10 Apr. 1875 stampless env. to London with a near fine "PORT AU PRINCE/A" c.d.s. on the front alongside a very fine strike of a large Handstruck "3/-" mark (double 12-6s rate?), very similar to the rare Liverpool "2/-" mark listed by Tabeart/Robertson (but possibly also used in London??).
