772 "CHINESE" GORDON ENVELOPE WITH SIGNED CONTENTS WRITTEN ON THE LAST DAY OF 1879 PRIOR TO HIS RESIGNING AS GOVERNOR GENERAL OF THE SUDAN: 1879 (31 Dec) env. from "Chinese" Gordon with contents headed "Gulf of Suez" addressed to "H Ex Geigla Pasha/& &/Kartoum" franked with an Egyptian 1pi stamp cancelled with a very fine "POSTE EGIZIANE/SUEZ" c.d.s. with a further strike alongside. The contents comprise My Dear Geigla/We hope to be at Suez tomorrow/the P.K. steamers are fearful, we/had to stop until the wind feel for/36 hrs, under an island, not /having made 8 knots in 8 hours. Why they keep these steamers on i do not/know.At Suakin, i got a lot of/letters from Umpadglia. It is a blessing/he has gone , even if we do lose money./I shall be glad to get to Cairao & to/finish off one way ,or another, to/stay on with the Khedive not wanting/me , is impossible./ I hear Lowe is very ill, & will/not be able to come up again./I will write to you from Cairo/Yours Sincerely/C E Gordon" A rare and fine item, surviving letters of this period from Gordon are scarce. He resigned as Governor General in early 1880 because of ill health, returning in February 1884 only to be heroically killed at Khartoum on 26 January 1885. PHOTO £500
773 POSTCARD SENT FROM LUXOR BY AMERICAN TOURISTS THE DAY AFTER GORDON REACHED KHARTOUM: 1884 (19 Feb) Egyptian 20pa postcard from Luxor via Assiout & Alexander to Iowa with various transit c.d.s. dated 19 February 1884 the day following Gordons arrival at Khartoum. The contents are mainly holiday banter but finish with "We hear a lot of talk about el Mahdi, It is believed by some if the English do not act promptly he will march into Lower Egypt however at present things are very quite & the natives do not believe him". Creased but it is interesting to note that it appeared that little was known about the impending disasters. PHOTO £150

AT SAWAKIN - CHARGED POSTAGE DUE BUT NOT COLLECTED:1896 (21 June) 1a on 9pi soldiers' & Seaman's env most probably posted in the Sawakin civil P.O.(the base office on Quarantine Island opened on that day and the Sawakin APO was not open), sent via Suez & Sea P.O. to Bombay., properly countersigned and cancelled with the "SAWAKIN" c.d.s. plus "OVERLAND POSTAGE/DUE/As/5" circular h.s. 788 A RARE ENVELOPE TO A MEMBER OF THE EXPEDITION:1898 (2 Jan) env ex the Sandbach correspondence from Oswestry addressed "C/O Thomas Cook & Sons, Cairo redirected to Halfa franked with GB 1⁄2d & 1d (2), "POST OFFICE/CAIRO/COOK'S TOURIST SERVICE" c.d.s. on front with a further example on reverse, also on reverse are a further eight transit c.d.s.. 789 BERBER "NO STAMPS AVAILABLE" COVER - PROVING THE BERBER P.O. WAS NOT OPEN AT THIS TIME:1897 (2 Oct) env to Penarth redirected to Kinsale sent unpaid with m/s "Active Service/No Stamps available" officer signed and dated "Berber 2 10 97", "HALFA" c.d.s. boxed "T" and a fine London "21⁄2D/F.B." which has been crossed through.
