573 THE RARE OCTAGONAL BOXED KINGSTON "SHIP LETTER" MARK: 1879 (14 April) EL (usual creases) from Jeremie, Haiti to Kingston with a pencil "5" charge & a very fine octagonal "SHIP LETTER" mark (three years later than recorded) on the front and with fine Kingston c.d.s. of the 21st on the reverse. Governor, Jamaica" with a fine example of the s/l "PACKET LETTER" (applied in London). 577 THE "FALMOUTH MUTINY" LETTER FROM JAMAICA: 1810 (Nov.) EL (toned crease clear of marks) from "Sav. La Mar" to London with a fair "JAMAICA" fleuron d.s. on reverse, charged "2/-". Double letter ex Clarendon to Hawick per "Queensbury Packet" forwarded by way of the Commercial Rooms & mailed as a "loose letter" and with the "JAMAICA/F" handstamp applied on arrival at Falmouth. 584 PACKET LETTER TO SCOTLAND WITH RARE MISSENT TO INVERNESS MARK: 1853 (10 Sept.) mourning env. from Kingston to Glenlivet, Scotland endorsed "Per Packet" sent to Inverness in error & thus receiving rare boxed "MISSENT/TO/INVERNESS" mark in dark green ink. Most unusual. Contents include fascinating information re yellow fever epidemic on the island that had claimed the lives of 4 officers and 15 soldiers. PHOTO £150

593 PACKET LETTER FROM KINGSTON TO FRANCE VIA LONDON WITH BOXED RED "FORWARDED BY/BARCLAY & CO/KINGSTON/JAMAICA"AND SCARCE FRENCH "GB/2F, 40C" CHARGE MARK: 1857 (1 July) opened out Packet Letter from Kingston to France via London with a wealth of markings including triangular "GB" surmounting rectangular "2F 40C" (displaying the amount the French P.O. had to pay the British P.O. for carriage from the West Indies on a British ship). Salles notes that this mark was only recorded in 1857 on letters ex Canada & Jamaica and a red boxed "FORWARDED BY/BARCLAY & CO/KINGSTON/JAMAICA" mark .PHOTO £200

EL from Leogan, St. James, Jamaica to a member of the Legislative Council, New Market, Upper Canada posted on the 7th February where it was carried by feeder service to St. Thomas & thence to Bermuda - catching the mail boat "Osprey" and arriving in New Market on 2nd April 1849 endorsed "paid 8d" in red and with s/l "MORE TO PAY" mark applied at Halifax leading to a revised charge of "2/9½" (for mail carried a distance between 1201 & 1300 miles).PHOTO £150

602 RARE EARLY 1d CONCESSIONARY RATE COVER TO A SAILOR WHO DIED WHILE IT WAS EN ROUTE: 1801 (29 July) E (one side-flap removed & ink stains on address) with faint "WALTHAM CROSS" mileage mark on the front, endorsed "Post Paid 1d" with red m/s "Pd 1" & London "PAID" d.s. addressed to "Mr. George Farrington, H.M.S. La Topaze at the Island of Jamaica". The addressee died of yellow fever in August 1801 and this item never reached him. Rare early concessionary rate item. Ex Swarbrick. PHOTO £300

Phaeton" countersigned by the commanding officer with GB 1d red applied on arrival in London and cancelled by "50" numeral of the Foreign Branch Office & 1864 env. from the same correspondence bearing GB 1d red similarly cancelled but with m/s endorsement reading "From Isaac Dawson Seaman/H.M.S. 607 SAVANNA LA MAR - PRE NUMERAL USAGE: 1858 (25 Oct.) EL to London, datestamped at Savanna La Mar and with Kingston d.s. on reverse applied in transit bearing GB 6d tied by "A01" cancellation. British postage stamps came into general use in May 1858 and District Postmasters were specifically instructed prior to the issue of their obliterator handstamps in March 1859 "not to cancel GB stamps in any way but merely to impress letters with their datestamps leaving the actual cancellation of the stamps to Kingston Post Office" (A01). 631 POSTCARD SENT BY RAIL THE DAY AFTER THE 1907 EARTHQUAKE: 1907 (24 Jan.) PPC to New York bearing Arms 1d tied by double-ring "JAMAICA RAILWAY/SPANISH TOWN" c.d.s. in blue. Message includes "Weather very fine. We leave for Spanish Town today. Everything is destroyed here. Sleep without any covers on, open doors and windows".
