482 RARE EARLY INGOING COVER WITH G.B. EMBOSSED 10d & 1/- CHARGED 4d VIA HONG KONG; Fine 24 Sept. 1852 small env. to "Fred Howe Hale Esqre., H.B.M. Consulate, Shanghai, China" and franked by G.B. Embossed 10d (cut square with 4 clear to wide margins; rare thus) and 1/- green (cut square with two clear to wide margins, shaved on the other sides) tied/cancelled by matching London "10" in diamond numerals, having a very fine "HONG-KONG/6NO6/1852" transit double-arc c.d.s. on the reverse, and charged "4" on the front for the final journey from HK to Shanghai. JAMES WALE AS POSTMASTER OF THE ISLAND OF JAMAICA: Single sheet printed on both sides with "Numb 2256" at top right hand corner containing on the reverse the announcement that "All masters of ships and others that carry letters to the Island of Jamaica are to take notice that His Majesty hath established a Post Office in the said island whereof Mr. James Wale is Postmaster unto whom they are to deliver their letters when they arrive in the said island". £100

Smith", charged "1N6" (the increased 1704 single rate) on the front with a London Bishop Mark of 6th January on reverse. Long contents. 499 EARLY LETTER CARRIED BY PRIVATE SHIP TO ENGLAND WITH REFERENCE TO THE "PACKET SERVICE": 1711 (11 Oct.) EL addressed to a Colonel Charles Long, London carried per the "Diamond" under the command of Captain Good, treated as a double letter on arrival and charged "1 N1" to include a Captain's gratuity of 1d (London Bishop Mark of 21st December indicates a journey time of 71 days).The contents refer to the receipt on 30th September of a letter of "ye 14th July per the packet" (probably the "Martlett") PHOTO. £200

"Kingston" anchored at Port Antonio addressed to Woolwich with 4d charge applied in manuscript (interesting contents include "We are now closed at Port Antonio and shall soon sail for Port Royal where we expect the newes of a war from Europe", 1734 (December) EL from Captain Trevor anchored at Port Royal addressed to Woolwich and a May 1736 EL from Captain Fox of H.M.S. "Drake" at Port Royal to the same addressee (John Russell, Clerk to the Cheque at Woolwich) re the death of the ship's clerk. A useful trio. (3). £150
502 EXCEPTIONALLY EARLY ENTIRE LETTER EX JAMAICA TO EDINBURGH: 1735 (1 Feb.) EL from an officer on board H.M.S. "Dunkirk" a sixty gun warship anchored at Port Royal addressed to "The Honble Sir John Clerk Bartt. one of the Barons at the Exchequer in Scotland att his house in Edinburgh" carried privately to England via Sloop, originally rated at 4d but subsequently amended to 10d covering postage to edinburgh from London. Bishop Mark of 7th June indicates a transit period of 127 days between Jamaica & London. PHOTO. £120
503 EARLY LETTER FROM MEXICO TO HOLLAND FORWARDED IN JAMAICA BY BENJ BRAVO - THE EARLIEST RECORDED WESTERN HEMISPHERE FORWARDING AGENT: 1737 (27 May) EL from Manzanillos (Mexico) to Holland endorsed on reverse "Jamaica 25th June 1837/Forwarded by Yr Humble Servt., Benj Bravo" with interesting contents (written in Dutch but with an accompanying transcript) including "In that case we should have to remain here for 3 or 4 months because there were so many perils because of a Spanish man-of-war" and "I decided to remain here for 2 to 3 months and then to depsrt to Portobello as we have heard that the town of Panama has been totally burnt". 504 EARLY LETTER FROM LIEUTENANT CLELAND ON BOARD H.M.S. "EXPERIMENT" AT PORT ROYAL: 1740 (12 December) EL to the Clerk to the Cheque, Deptford with interesting contents including "to the 29th August we had a very fine passage but the day produced such a Hurricane which is impossible to describe. I was in that of 1722 - 90 Sailors Ships & Sloops lost - it was no more than a common sea breeze to this last". London Bishop Mark of 11th April. £100
505 ENTIRE LETTER FROM JAMAICA TO FRANCE VIA LONDON: 1743 (11 August) EL from Jamaica to France carried by private ship to London thence forwarded by Thos. Thomarssili on 19th October to its destination of La Rochelle. The letter was written by a member of the crew of a French trading vessel which was apprehended by H.M.S. "York" whilst trying to run the British blockade of the Spanish held port of Carthagena. Escorted back to Jamaica he wrote to his brother whilst waiting for his ship to be cleared by a magistrate as being "Free from contraband". Fascinating. PHOTO. £240

EL ex London to Jamaica endorsed "P Fawkener Packet" (Captain Charles Turner) rated "3n" (3/-) with a somewhat smudged example of the rare first type "JAMAICA" straight line mark (only four known) applied on arrival of the packet in Kingston. The letter was delayed at Falmouth until 7th March due to gales. A remarkable and potentially unique item. PHOTO. £500

515 1752 LETTER REFERRING TO AN ESCAPEE FROM A SHIP (AND FROM PRESS-GANGING?): EL from Kingston addressed to Mrs Judith Woolhead at the/Seven Stars over against Salisbury/Court in Fleet Street/London and carried by the 'Finder'. The letter concerns the death of the addressee's brother ...this poor unhappy man ...Overwhelmed with wretchedness, barefooted, almost naked and very near Famished...he protested he had suffered great Distress on board a Guineaman and from thence had escaped at the Hazard of starving... [Did he escape the press-gang?] Some edge wear, especially internally, but a fascinating letter. £120

The 1782 EL has particularly interesting contents including "The Spanish Force at Hispaniola I think is not sufficient for an enterprise of magnitude; our Fleet at Windward is much superior to the French and there is recent intelligence that our Fleet was cruising off Martinica in order to intercept the Reinforcement expected from France; should we be so fortunate there will be an end of the enemies operations in those seas this year and in event of their escaping our Fleet and proceeding immediately to Hispaniola Sir George Rodney must have some account of it and I apprehend will follow them for the protection of Jamaica - if we eacape the present danger I believe the Island will be better taken off from hence in future". 544 THE FAMOUS "DISCOVERY COPY" OF THE RARE JAMAICAN BISHOP MARK: 1799 EL from Saybrook, Connecticut to St. Mary's, Jamaica forwarded from New York by J. Cornwall & Co. with Bishop Mark of "MR/18". Only around eight or nine of these Bishop Marks are known and this was the first one to be discovered (by the Late Martin Willcocks in 1968) and was subsequently illustrated in a great many BWI magazine articles & in "The Philatelist" of October 1974. One of the most famous of all Jamaican pre-stamp covers. Note: Cavendish sold another Jamaican Bishop Mark in the "Swarbrick" sale of 1995 for some £2,640. PHOTO £1500

547 TRIO OF JAMAICA "FLEURON" COVERS TO THE UNITED KINGDOM: 1818-19 trio of E/EL's to the U.K., all with very good examples of the Jamaica "Fleuron" cancellation. The 1818 example is dated 14th March and is endorsed "packet" & "2/2" whilst the 1819 examples are dated 25th October & 6th November. The former of these is addressed to Ayr and rated "4/6" with the Fleuron erroneously reading "1816" due to the figure "9" being inserted upside down and the latter "P Packet Manchester" is rated at "4/4" & is addressed to London. 548 RARE ENCIRCLED "PAID TO ENGLAND" MARK ON PACKET LETTER TO LONDON: 1810 EL from Kingston to London endorsed "p Packet/Q.D.C." & "4/-" showing a faint example of the rare encircled "PAID/TO/ENGLAND" mark (applied at Kingston) and (on reverse) a good example of the "JAMAICA" fleuron with "1- - 8" year error. Also a couple of plain "Paid" covers, one being an 1834 internal EL with contents ref the death of three soldiers endorsed "O.H.M. Service" & "Postage Paid" in m/s, the other being an 1811 E to London thence readdressed to Bath with m/s "Postage to London Paid". 551 SCARCE PRE-1840 INLAND MONEY LETTER, ETC. 1836 (28 August) EL to May Hill Post Office endorsed "Money Letter" in manuscript and additionally numbered (26) in accordance with the Post Office regulations that such registered mail should be entered into Despatch Books & Bag Dockets. Further "1/10" m/s endorsement indicates that the double fee of 1/- was levied as well as the additional 10d for registration; also 1830 EL to the U.K. , 1834 Packet Letter per "Mutine" to London rated "2/2" & 1834 EL ex May Hill to the U.K. rated "2/3" in error and amended to "2/2" (4). Hume, a Baptist Missionary at Fullers Field reporting the proceedings of an Anti-Slavery Meeting and an unused Anti-Slavery envelope printed by J. Valentine of Dundee. (3). £150

(presumably in m/s due to the handstamp having been mislaid at that time). Note: T. Foster records m/s markings of Little River P.O. from 7 February 1829 to 5th Oct. 1830. £150

Mrs Skirrow sends you by this bearer 10/- which she requests you will purchase for her a vial of the Antique oil for the hair". Note: Reference to the bearer of such locally delivered letters was in accordance with the law which aimed at preventing slaves from straying from their own plantations under normal circumstances. 560 SLAVERY RELATED EPHEMERA: 1826 printed letter advertising the details of certain resolutions entered into at a public meeting held at Morant Bay with a view to extend more effectually the Negro Slaves of the parish the means of Religious Instruction through the instrumentality of Ministers, Cathechists or Schoolmasters of the established church, 1825 anti-slavery leaflet with on one side a copper engraved vignette of a female slave named "Phoebe" with the text of a slave sale advertisement from the Jamaica Royal Gazette and on reverse the text of an anti-slavery letter from the "Devizes Gazette" of 10th September 1825 and a photocopy of an auction bill of sale for slaves (the original being in the possession of the Wilberforce Museum in Hull.
