SUPERB HAND-COLOURED SOLDIER's PORTRAIT SENT AT THE 1d CONCESSION RATE FROM CHATHAM; Exceptionally rare 6/7 Aug. 1833 EL (some dusting and weak folds etc.; typed transcript of colloquially spelled contents) to Glasgow headed & countersigned for the Soldier's 1d Concession rate for "Thomas Russell, Gunner, the H[on] I[ndia] E[ast] Artilary [sic]", with a red manuscript "1" and London transit "PAID" d.s. on the front as well as a fine red "CHATHAM" c.d.s. on the flap; headed from "Bramanto Barracks [Chatham]", having a beautifully coloured and proficient portrait of the writer on the first sheet ("I send you my likeness to you for to keep to the memory of your son"), with the covering letter written on the other sheet announcing that the writer ("your disob[edi]ent son") was about to sail for "Beangall" [= Bengal, India]. It is known that 19th century army units sometimes included amateur artists who would provide such portraits of their fellow-soldiers on letter-sheets to be sent to families and loved ones; very few survive and this makes a dramatic Exhibition Item for any collection. [On a par with the late Martin Willcocks' 1837 pictorial naval letter-sheet sold by Cavendish in their May 200 auction (lot 871) for £2,645.] PHOTO. |
