162 RARE VERY LARGE 3rd-TYPE "QUEBEC/17/CANADA/99[?]" 'BISHOP MARK' ON COVER TO NEW BRUNSWICK; Unusual 4 Feb. 1799 fine EL from "Quebec" addressed to "Henry Blackstone Esqr., Comptroller, St. Johns" (thought to have been sent to Montreal and then forwarded by private - or State? - means to New Brunswick), charged "9" (Currency) in red with a partly fine strike of the large "QUEBEC/17/CANADA/99[?]" mark with fine "4/FE" in centre (both marks creased and the former across the join) on the reverse. 163 THE EARLIEST RECORDED SOLDIER's 1d CONCESSION RATE FROM CANADA - WITH "QUEBEC/OCT31.99"; Fine 31 Oct. 1799 EL (typed transcript; a sad letter ref. the writer's being unable to avoid transfer to England which will separate him from his wife & children in Canada) to Chambly endorsed "From a Sergeant, 26th Regiment" and countersigned by "[Lord] Elphinstone" on the front, with a small red manuscript "1d" at top right (prepaid), with a mostly very fine scarce Type II "QUEBEC/OCT31.99" mark (this type only recorded for 1799) on the reverse. 164 RARE EARLY ABUSE OF SOLDIER's 1d CONCESSION RATE COVER WITH "QUEBEC/JAN.15[?] 1800" MARK; 9/15 Jan. 1800 EL (some dusting and with 'magic' sellotape on folds, but with full typed transcript) written by one "Francis Quin" at "Quebec" to "Dear Ann" (his wife; general greetings) but addressed to "Joseph Charlong, Soldier 41st Regt., Montreal" with cryptic "A.Q." annotation beside the address, clearly intended to show the addressee that this letter was actually intended for his friend's wife, Ann Quinn!! There is a small red manuscript "1d" at top right; prepaid 1d Concession Rate, and there is a mostly fine "QUEBEC/JAN.15[?] 1800" datestamp on the flap. Plus attractive 23 July 1843 E to Kingston charged "1/2" with a superb red "STE. ANNE DE LA PERADE/-L.C.-" UDC in red on the front with clear manuscript date in centre. Good matched pair; the P.O. was opened in 1820 but the first handstamp (this UDC) was not issued until 1839. Few of these pre-1839 Manuscript marks are known and this is a very early date. James Baby, York" charged "11d" (Currency) with an 85% very fine large fancy "POST OFFICE/[Crown]/AMHERSTBURG" Bagseal Mark in black (29mm diameter; filing crease) nicely placed on the front. 224 SPECTACULAR SMALL RED "[Crown]/PORT HOPE" BAGSEAL ON MONEY LETTER TO "NEWCASTLE DISTRICT"; 16 Nov. 1846 EL (ref. enclosed Return of Convictions and sending £1-15s-0d in Fines) unusually addressed to "Clerk of the Peace, Newcastle District, C.N."; posted from "RIVER-TRENT/U.C." (v. fine black c.d.s. with part manuscript date - inverted! - on the front) endorsed "Money" and so charged "1/6" (double rate) having a partial red "FORWARDED" on the front matching the superb small red intaglio "[Crown]/PORT HOPE" Bagseal mark also on the front It seems that the letter's address caused the P.O. some problems, and there are backstamps of Cobourg (16 Nov.) and Port Hope (17 Nov.) as well. Presumably the Bagseal was struck to emphasise the official nature of the Forwarding. Thought to be the only recorded example of this Bagseal Mark and particularly spectacular in red ink. 225 SMALL BLACK "NEW LIVERPOOL/[Crown]/L.C" INTAGLIO BAGSEAL MARK ON COVER; 26 Aug. 1846 EL (minor wear) purportedly from "Quebec" addressed to "St. Nicholas" with a very fine "PAID 3" mark on the front, and having only one other mark - across the join on the reverse - a very fine black intaglio 2-ring "NEW LIVERPOOL/L.C" Intaglio Mailbag Seal mark. (yellow paper) to Niagara ex "CLIFTON" (fair backstamp) via St. Thomas & London with a fine red "PAID 5" mark (presumably of Clifton) on the front, thoroughly overstruck by about 5 overlapping very fine strikes of the Niagara 4-ring "23" numeral (looking like "22" in places) with a very fine "UNPAID 7", matching the very fine rare small black Intaglio "[Crown]/NIAGARA" Mailbag Seal mark all on the front. 227 FORT GARRY, RED RIVER TO INDIAN SETTLEMENT - COVERING LETTER FOR NOTICE REF. MAIL CENSORSHIP; Very fine and important 20 Dec. 1844 EL headed from "Fort Garry, Red River Settlement" written and signed by "Alexr. Christie" (the Governor of Assiniboia) and addressed to "The Rev. J. Smithurst, Indian Settlement". The writer gives thanks for a letter (17 Nov. 1844) from Indian Settlement, and referring to a Notice (the full text of which is given in RL Encyc. Vol.V, p.86) that was enclosed, advising inhabitants of Red River that all mail would now have to be sent to Fort Garry for inspection, in an attempt to guard against the illegal (i.e. not through the HBC) trade in fur: "Herewith you will receive another Notice in reference to the illicit traffic of Furs, and the time of sending the usual winter Express home for England, which please direct to be known to all inhabitants of the Indian Settlement". Rare internal letter from this part of the world long before there was any P.O. service available, and an unusual reference to the HBC controlling every aspect of the inhabitants' lives. 228 RED RIVER - EARLY INGOING LETTER FROM THE BISHOP OF MONTREAL; Interesting 9 Apr. 1847 EL written and signed by "[the Bishop of] Montreal" addressed to Rev. J Smithurst "Indian Church, Red River" with long personal letter on current events, referring to the Red River's recent problems with "distinctive maladies" akin to Cholera; also mentioning that he wanted to sent some booklets but that "...I fear I have let the season slip by, during which I could expect a good & safe opportunity of sending a parcel to [i.e. via] Lachine", the HBC Montreal HQ. Fine early ingoing letter with an unusual reference to disease in, and the difficulties of sending parcels to, Red River. PHOTO. £300
229 EARLY LETTER FROM "INDIAN SETTLEMENT" ENDORSED "PREPAID 10 CENTS" VIA THE U.S.; 8 Feb. 1858 env. (minor wear; later pencil not of date & place of origin on front) endorsed (at Red River?) "Prepaid 10 cents" addressed to Rev. J. Smithurst (long-time resident of Indian Settlement) and endorsed (by him?) as being from "Hy Cockrin"; addressed to "Elora, Canada West" but mis-read as "Elma" so sent there first and endorsed "Try Elora"; posted by the normal route through Pembina in the U.S, hence with a mostly fine red oval-framed "UNITED/6D./STATES" Cross-Border mark, with backstamps inc. Windsor CW (18 Mar.). Such early mail from the Red River Settlement is very rare. PHOTO. £600

PREPAYMENT OF THE 15c RATE; Rare 23 Sept. 1858 Toronto "POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT" partly printed EL sent free on "Official Business" (printed heading above address) to "The Postmaster At [Kingsville] County of [Essex]" with "R. SPENCE/Postmaster General" imprint beside address, having hand-written note ref. "The Postage on Letters for Vancouver's Island - 15 cents - must be prepaid. Such letters are forwarded on New York; the American Government will carry them into Oregon [via Panama]". Important evidence of the special rules for mail to the Island at this early date. Ct. Corbans". Very early reference to a letter sent by water; no postal service in this area at this time so sent courtesy of a ship's captain (?) and so without postal marks. Rare thus. 239 HAMILTON - RARE TINY "STEAMBOAT" MARK ON "WAY" COVER FROM TORONTO; 25 Sept. 1839 EL (reinforced fold) to Hamilton endorsed "Way" and charged "41⁄2" with a mostly fine tiny black "STEAMBOAT" mark nicely placed at upper left, having a very fine matching "HAMILTON/U.C" c.d.s. below. 240 SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE RED "[Crown]/STEAM-BOAT" MARK ON COVER TO DRUMMONDVILLE; Attractive 5/6 Apr. 1840 E ("I write hurriedly in order to send this over by boat.") from "Toronto" (filing note) to "A.C.[?] Genl. Scobell, Drummondsville" charged "2[+]/41⁄2[=]61⁄2" (2d Lake Ontario Steamboat charge + 41⁄2d inland postage) having a superb small red encircled "[Crown]/STEAM-BOAT" mark on the front matching the equally fine large red "NIAGARA/U/C/" c.d.s. alongside and the near fine red "FORWARDED" mark in the opposite corner.
