| 1573 | RARE EARLY LETTER AT 6d RATE TO LONDON WITH FINE ARRIVAL BISHOP MARK; 25 May 1667 EL (some light stains to address-panel; ref. a legal dispute with the "Sheriffs of Dublin", signed by "Jas. Morley [&] Wm. Belke") to London charged "6" with a very fine London "IV/1" arrival Bishop Mark (just affected by filing fold) nicely placed on the side-flap. Attractive letter written the year after the Great Fire. [Ex Binnie.] PHOTO PLATE IBC-B | £300 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1574 | VERY EARLY SHORT-LIVED UNFRAMED DUBLIN "Free" MARK ON INTERNAL COVER; Fine 1 July 1707 EL from "Dublin" franked by the writer "Ro[bert] Levinge" to "Cookes Burrough near Mullingar" having a mostly very fine strike of the tiny Dublin "Free" mark (only two or three example recorded; all 1707-8) on the front, matching the mostly very fine 'split' "IY/1" Dublin Bishop Mark on the side-flap. London had no free mail marks before 1764 and this is one of only a handful of Irish marks recorded prior to 1710. [The similar example - to the same address and dated only two days earlier - in Cavendish's 'Frank Bottomley' auction in Sept. 1998 realised £1,700.] Important Free Franks Exhibition Item. | 1575 | RED WAX "GEN. POST OFFICE/GALWAY/ROAD/2/[IRE]LAND" BAGSEAL ON COVER TO DUBLIN; Extraordinary 20/22 Feb. 1856 env. to Dublin franked by two 1d Red 'stars;' tied by a single scarce "Chatham/173" Sideways Duplex, inexplicably having a 90%-complete wax impression of this Post Office seal across the flap on the reverse. It seems that the letter was found open on arrival in Dublin, but why this seal (with every appearance of being a pre-1840 design) was in use in the Dublin P.O. is a mystery. Very rare and beautiful item; photography cannot do justice to this wonderful seal, which is the only example of its kind that we have seen. PHOTO | £150 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1576 | WATERCOLOUR PICTORIAL COVER WITH RARE DUBLIN "POSTED SINCE" DUPLEX; Remarkable large 15 Feb. 1858 env. (closed tear at top left) sent locally in Dublin franked by 1d Red 'stars' (vertical pair) tied by mostly very fine rare "POSTED SINCE/TN.RECR./LAST NIGHT/186" duplexes; the copper-plate address surrounded by a fine watercolour classical landscape. Rare combination of an early coloured Pictorial cover with a rare cancellation! [Ex Shaida.] PHOTO | £150 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
