1472 EARLY "BY EXPRESS FROM BOMBAY" PREPAID (IN CASH) COVER TO CALCUTTA VIA FRANCE; 25 July 1855 EL prepaid "1/10" in cash with red "LONDON/PAID" c.d.s. endorsed "Overland via Marseilles via Bombay" at top and "by Express from Bombay" at foot; there is an unclear Calcutta Aug. 1855 transit c.d.s. on the reverse. Both Blair/Martin & the Moubrays state that this Express service across India was withdrawn some time in 1853 but no official Notice appears to have been unearthed as yet; could this cover prove that it continued into 1855? The "Express" endorsement is the correct wording as per the 1847 Notice. Fine and intriguing. Note: Max Smith and Robert are writing a book on the subject of Express Fee, After Packet and Late Fee letters in India to be published by the Stuart Rossiter Trust in the next twelve months. This 3s-3d rate was correct for this rarely used service; 9d postage via Marseilles + 6d Reg. fee + 2s-0d prepaid Indian Express Fee.
