1935 ESSAY - SURCHARGE IN RED - “15 MILLIEMES” ON 10 MILLS: A very fresh, near-invisibly mounted, marginal example (die B-1). Usually referred to in error as a “proof surcharge”, it is actually printed from a different forme than the issued stamp (an obvious fact, as this example has a pennon on the upper tip of the Arabic letter lam, a variety that does not occur on any issued stamp). Less then 50 produced. Hass Cert (2006). PHOTO |

1935 15m on 10m SURCHARGE MISPLACED UPWARD - ARABIC ALMOST ABSENT: A very fresh, unmounted example (die B, pos 39) of what was possibly a trial, or ‘make ready’ impression, in which the spacing between some rows of the surcharging forme were abnormally, widely spaced, and some smashing visible on some of the Arabic letters. The surcharge on this stamp is so severely misplaced upward that the English and Arabic are transposed, the English being from position 44 (at foot) with only the very slightest bit of the Arabic (portions of tail of final mim and dots of ya) of position 39 falling onto the upper margin. 1914 10pi WITH "AS" PERFINS: A fine unmounted mint marginal example from the foot of the sheet. A rare example being type 6 of the 12 types that make up the perforating/puncturing comb (rather than having been punctured into previously printed stamps, the "AS" 7 "SG" perfins were freshly printed, and were perforated/punctured in a single operation using a specially prepared comb). One of only 600 examples produced, the majority were postally used.SG A 25 Hass Cert (2006). PHOTO |

ELIHU BURRITT WRITES TO THE PUBLISHER OF "OCEAN PENNY POSTAGE" ENVELOPES; Remarkable original 29 Sept. 1849 letter (no env.; some toning and minor faults) written (on fancy printed "LEAGUE OF UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD... London" notepaper) and signed by the famous proponent of Ocean Penny Postage , "Elihu Burritt" [to the Dundee publisher of the Ocean Penny Postage and other propaganda envelopes], regarding Valentines continuing success with the envelopes; "...I should have been very glad to have met you while in Scotland, but my time was limited. I am surprised and glad to hear of your remarkable success in pushing the sale of your Envelope. I hope it may reward you to give still more time to it, and that you may get off a million. You will thus contribute a great instrumentality to the success of Ocean Penny Postage...Yours sincerely, Elihu Burritt." Unique and important evidence of the start of the friendship between these two important advocates of Cheap Transatlantic Postage. Plus a stamp-removed 7 Feb. 1852 usage of a Valentine "OCEAN PENNY POSTAGE" envelope from "Elihu Burritt" himself and addressed to "Mr. James Valentine" at Dundee. Rare pair. (2 items). |

ELIHU BURRITT WRITES TO JAMES VALENTINE WITH IDEAS FOR THE WORDING OF A PROPAGANDA COVER; Important 5 Oct. 1849 letter (no env.; the follow-up letter to the previous letter) written from "Liverpool" just as Burritt was about to sail to America, with suggested alterations for the well-known Universal Brotherhood envelopes about to be produced by Valentines of Dundee, written and signed "Elihu Burritt" by the great man himself; "I have no time to write but a few words. I wish I had time to bestow a few thoughts upon the selection of mottoes for your envelope, but I have not. Suppose you should adopt these words instead of yours: [written in a curved format roughly as the size on a cover;] Peace on Earth. Good will to Men. Universal Brotherhood." [Plus, straight as at the foot of an address;] "God hath made of one blood all nations of men." He adds that; "The words 'Arbitration of War' are hardly good sense..." In fact Valentine seems to have accepted some of these ideas; the final format was "ARBITRATION FOR WAR. UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD. FREEDOM OF COMMERCE." It is also interesting to note that one of Valentine's later Anti-Slavery envelopes carried the exact phrase used here by Burritt; "GOD HATH MADE OF ONE BLOOD ALL NATIONS OF MEN" in Britannia's banner beside the address. Plus a pasted down front (Proof?) of the 1st State of the Valentine envelope which Burritt was discussing [from the same original Scottish source as the letter]; the rare Error of spelling - "ARBRITATION" for "ARBITRATION". Important addition to our knowledge of the development of British Propaganda Envelopes. (2 items). PHOTO PLATE IBC-A |

JOSEPH HUME WRITES ABOUT "OCEAN POSTAGE" ENVELOPES TO JAMES VALENTINE HIMSELF; 4 Dec. 1850 mourning env. (slightly dusty) to "Mr. Valentine, Stationer & Printer, Dundee" franked by a 1d Red (faults) just tied by a London diamond numeral and signed at bottom left by the Radical reforming M.P. "Joseph Hume"; complete with original contents written and signed ("Joseph Hume") by the man himself. The letter gives a new and important insight into how the well-known "Ocean Penny Postage" envelopes were promoted by word-of-mouth; "The envelopes that I handed round at the Meeting [of the Society of Arts] were those you had sent me a long time ago...I have used the whole of them, from time to time to influential persons, with the view of forwarding the great cause of Ocean Postage. I suggested to the Meeting that each of those present should supply themselves with your Covers & use them daily, as a means of making the Object better known...what rate... [can you] supply the Envelopes for Ocean Postage?...If you will give me the current figure for 100, I can make arrangements for them being sold at the Society of Arts, at the weekly meetings. I shall be glad to receive 100 of the Envelopes that I may use them daily..." Fascinating! Plus pair of unrelated unused Deraedemaeker reprints; the Valentine Ocean P.P. env. & the Onwhyn 'Civilisation of America' env. (3 items). PHOTO PLATE IBC-A |
