PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
342 EARLY INGOING COVER WITH ?P.O. MANUSCRIPT MARK & SQUARE LONDON 'EXPERIMENTAL' "POSTAGE/PAID" DATESTAMPS ; Spectacular 4 March 1794 EL prepaid from "Edin[bu]r[gh]" (fair red Bishop Mark on reverse) to "the Island of St. John, Gulf of St. Lawrence" via an agent in "Hallifax, North America" having two lovely strikes of the very rare square-framed 'Experimental' London "POSTAGE/PAID" datestamps (Jay L96; only recorded for March of that year) on the front. Charged "Ship Lre 21⁄2[d]" on arrival (2d sterling = 21⁄2d currency Nova Scotia charge for an incoming letter addressed to the port of arrival), having a mostly very fine scarce claret-purple "HALIFAX/N: SCOTIA" partly framed d.s. (light crease; with "APR 27/94" in the centre) on the reverse. There is also an unusual manuscript "Island St. John/10 May 1794" (written before opening; crossed by opening cuts) on the flap which is in a different hand to the addressee's "Received 10 May 1794" annotation at the other end of the reverse; could the former be an early P.E.I. Post Office marking? If so it would seem to be unrecorded, though we have seen one other example from this same correspondence of the same date (but on a cover without the Experimental London Paid mark.). Exceptional usage of one of London's rarest prestamp marks and an exceptionally early ingoing letter to Prince Edward Island (that was known as the Island of St. John until it was renamed P.E.I. in 1799). Exhibition Quality. PHOTO. £400
