171 NAPOLEONIC WARS - SMUGGLED MAIL FROM BRITISH P.O.W.: Remarkable pair of letters written to his fiancee, Susannah Inkson, at Lynn by Briston Chamberlain, captain of a Norfolk merchant brig, captured in 1804 in the North Sea; interned as a POW in the fortress of Verdun, he escaped, was recaptured and sent to the notorious dungeons at Bitche whence he was pardoned after an interview with Napoleon in 1812, returning to Norfolk in 1814. The first, from Verdun (April 1807) refers to the ban on correspondence with the UK and says that the letter will be sent 'by the way of Holland'; the second, from Bitche (June 1812) : 'I know other channel then by way of the Transport board as by the same I write you' and is endorsed along one edge:'Captain Woodruffe at fortress Prison near Portsmouth...Have the goodness to give this Mr Ormiston'; accompanying the letters is an unusual large 'valentine' sheet addressed to the same woman, with various quotations in French, apparently copied from books, and three letters to the then Mrs.Chamberlain, 1817-34, from Briston at Portree, Hull & Elsinore. Remarkably authenticated by galley proofs of a detailed account written by the maritime author 'Taffrail' c1910 which quotes from both letters at length. Folds atrengthened with 'music tape', one corner almost detached. (8 items). £340

173 1st AFGHAN WAR - LETTER REF. AN A.W.O.L. SOLDIER HAVING BEEN PRESUMED MURDERED; Unusual 23 Jan. 1843 EL from "Bombay" (near fine red oval "INDIA" on the front) to Birmingham "Via Falmouth" and charged "1/-" Packet rate, having unusual contents. The Commander of the 2nd Battalion Artillery, Capt. J.S. Unwin, writes to tell the addressee that her son (during the 1st Afghan War) "...Gunner Alexander Montgomery was absent without leave from his Company while stationed at Kurachee in Scind; every search after him was fruitless and he was struck off the returns as 'Missing' on the 13th March 1841, since which he has never been heard of and it is supposed that he must have been murdered by the enemy and his body concealed." Short and to the point; rare evidence of a British deserter in the 1st Afghan War period. £120

237 RARE 'PENCE ISSUE' COVER TO ROME VIA FRANCE WITH SINGLE 1d BLUE FRANKING; 16 May 1864 EL (edge wear but attractive) to Rome endorsed "Overland via Marseilles" franked by a perf. 1d Blue tied by the barred oval cancel having a mostly fine red "COLOMBO/PAID" c.d.s. on the front, along with "46" (?) arrival charge in manuscript, a curved "CIVITAVECCHIA/DALLA/VIA DI MARE" and 2-ring red "POSS. ANG. V. SUEZ/1 MARSEILLE 1" c.d.s. Plus a further letter (no address wrapper) from the same correspondence. Very rare example of a Pence Issue cover to Rome; the regulations allowed part prepayment at this date - the 1d was to cover colonial internal postage, with the rest of the postage charged on arrival.
