| 171 | NAPOLEONIC WARS - SMUGGLED MAIL FROM BRITISH P.O.W.: Remarkable pair of letters written to his fiancee, Susannah Inkson, at Lynn by Briston Chamberlain, captain of a Norfolk merchant brig, captured in 1804 in the North Sea; interned as a POW in the fortress of Verdun, he escaped, was recaptured and sent to the notorious dungeons at Bitche whence he was pardoned after an interview with Napoleon in 1812, returning to Norfolk in 1814. The first, from Verdun (April 1807) refers to the ban on correspondence with the UK and says that the letter will be sent 'by the way of Holland'; the second, from Bitche (June 1812) : 'I know other channel then by way of the Transport board as by the same I write you' and is endorsed along one edge:'Captain Woodruffe at fortress Prison near Portsmouth...Have the goodness to give this Mr Ormiston'; accompanying the letters is an unusual large 'valentine' sheet addressed to the same woman, with various quotations in French, apparently copied from books, and three letters to the then Mrs.Chamberlain, 1817-34, from Briston at Portree, Hull & Elsinore. Remarkably authenticated by galley proofs of a detailed account written by the maritime author 'Taffrail' c1910 which quotes from both letters at length.
