415 6th MAY 1840 - PREPAID 2D-RATE COVER SENT FROM SCOTLAND BEFORE STAMPS WERE AVAILABLE THERE: 6 May 1840 EL (long printed circular ref. the Scottish Burghs holding a meeting; complete with separate enclosed sheet, which explains why this letter weighed above 1⁄2 an ounce) prepaid 2d from Edinburgh to "The Chief Majistrate, Wigton" with a red crayon (feint) "2" and a clear "PAID at EDINR/E/MAY 6/1840" c.d.s. nicely placed on the front. The 1d black was not available in Scotland on 6th May 1840, nor was the 2d blue, hence the need to pay this letter in cash. A rare item posted on this most significant date. PHOTO. £700
