59 EARLY LETTER - CORSINI LETTER FROM FRANCE; 1586 EL Calais to London without postal marks addressed to "Bartolome Corsyny" and endorsed "Av...(?) thomas ryttwoud que dieu garde". Written in Spanish the letter refers to the sending of 25 packets of paper from Paris with the carrier Ryttwoud. £75
60 ECUADOR TO FRANCE VIA PANAMA, 1859: E with letter ex Guayaquil (30.Sept.) referring to the truce in the war with Peru, following the inauguration of President Franco; the E has a Panama transit cds (DE 9/1859), a boxed accountancy mark 'GB/1F60c' overstruck by Calais TPO entry mark and '8' h.s. charge. ** 64 VERY RARE 1st-TYPE "LAND-MAIL" POSTAGE DUE LABEL ON INGOING COVER FROM FRANCE VIA CEYLON; 24 Jan. 1846 EL (some ink-etching of address wording and slight stains on address-panel but attractive) from "Bordeaux" to "Batavia (Ile Java)" with faint red Bordeaux c.d.s. and matching boxed "P.P." on the front, endorsed "English Steamer" with "Via Suez, Ceylon & Singapore" on the front, and so with faint black boxed "SINGAPORE/Bearing" d.s. across the join on the reverse, with manuscript "11 An[na]s" nearby. Also having a fine blue-paper 1st-Type "Aangebragt per Land - Mail./Te betalen port f [2 16] koper./BATAVIA, [12/11 1846" label (tiny faults along top) on the front, not tied (as usual) but clearly belonging. Rare example of this "World's First (?) Postage Due Label" (only in use from Mar. 1845 to Aug. 1846) on cover; the usage on a cover carried via Ceylon is exceptional. Exhibition Item. [The similar cover in Cavendish's 24 Sept. 2004 'Scott Archer' auction realised £2,760.] PHOTO. £2000

69 MARITIME - UNRECORDED "POSTED ON NON-CONTRACT VESSEL" MARK ON SURINAM COVER CANCELLED AT BARBADOS: 1897 E with a very fine strike in grey-brown of this previously unrecorded mark - 'Posted on non-Contract Vessel' - similar to the 'Posted on British Packet' mark found on similar covers; from Paramaribo to France with mixed franking Willem 10c & Willemina 15c tied by fine squared circle cancellation of Barbados! A most attractive & unusual exhibition piece. £360

COVER TO AUCKLAND: 1894 (Oct.) env. with stamps washed off from London (part duplexes of Leadenhall Street) to Auckland with v.fine purple "Saved from wreck of the/WAIRARAPA" mark on the front & sealed with a white paper printed "N.Z./V.R./FOUND OPEN/OFFICIALLY SEALED" label beside Auckland arrival c.d.s.(3 Nov.). Scarce & attractive cover from this Barrier Island wreck. Also an off-cover similar blue paper "Found Open" label with 1888 Hawera c.d.s. (2 items). £120

REGISTERED FROM ALGIERS TO FRANCE: Unusual Jan. 1901stampless official "VALEURS RECOUVREES" P.O printed envelope (flap lost) from "EL-ARICHA/ORAN" (v.fine c.d.s. on front matching small boxed "R" mark) to Besancon with two very fine strikes of the red "NAUFRAGE DE LA RUSSIE" mark on the front. Ex the ship wrecked off Marseilles. An exceptional official PO cover from a wreck. £90
73 WRECK MAIL - BLUE "NAUFRAGE du LIBAN" CACHET ON COVER FROM ALGERIA TO CORSICA: 1903 (5 June) env. (usual faults) from "BISKRA/CONSTANTINE" (v.fine c.d.s. on front; printed advert heading - stamp washed off) to St. Marie Siche, having a piece of stamp selvedge on the reverse tied by black Marseille c.d.s.'s (27 June) and a very fine blue "NAUFRAGE du LIBAN" mark. Unusual example of mail from this ship that came to grief en route from Marseilles to Corsica. £90
74 WRECK MAIL - WRECK OF S.S."BERLIN" - PRINTED MATTER MAIL FROM LONDON TO AMSTERDAM: 1907 (Feb.) large front (minor wear) of a "Drukwerk" wrapper ex London (firm's imprint) to Amsterdam with v.fine strike of the rare "BESCHADIGD DOOR RAMP/HARWICH BOOT" (damaged by sea water) which emanated from the wreck of the "Berlin" en route from Harwich to Holland. Rare on printed matter rate mail. Also a 1905 PPC of the ship. (2 items). £90

(stamp washed off - usual faults) from N.York to Tammerford with the Swedish white paper label on reverse ref the "Heimdalls" wreck and "Postdirektionen i/Stockholm c.d.s. Rare on mail from the States. Only 209 items believd to have been recovered! £90

(minor faults) to Ohio with NZ 1d (scuffs but still tied) and Auckland machine cancel, having a partly fine purple "Salvaged from/S.S. Tahiti/Lost at sea" cachet (struck in San Francisco; matching 1 Sept. c.d.s. on reverse) on the front; plus 14 Sept. 1930 related newspaper cutting with photo, and 17 Apr. 1929 env. to US with NZ 1d tied by v. fine "MARINE POST OFFICE/N.Z./R.M.S. 77 WRECK MAIL - S.S. 'EROS' - CANADA COVERS TO G.B. & SOUTH AFRICA WITH "SALVED" AND "DAMAGED" MARKS: 1940 (28 May) trio of envs. (usual faults); one with meter mark to S. Africa, the others to England with stamps washed off) from London & Toronto (both Ontario) all bearing very fine purple "SALVED FROM THE SEA" (2) or framed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION/IN SEA WATER" cachets. Attractive & scarce trio ex this ship torpedoed off Ireland and beached at Bloody Foreland. £90
78 WRECK MAIL - S.S. 'HEIAN MARU' - PURPLE "SALVED FROM THE SEA" MARK ON COVER EX JAPAN TO SCOTLAND: 4 May, 1940 env. (stamp washed off but only edge wear) ex Yokohama to Edinburgh whence re-directed to Pitlochry (pencil m/s note of arrival on 23 July) with partial Yokohama c.d.s. & superb "SALVED FROM THE SEA" mark in violet on the front and sealed with part British P.O. "(crown)G.R./...officially secured" brown tape. A scarce cover matching the one shown on p.100 of Hopkins which states the ship's name. £90

79 SEVEN YEARS WAR: 1762 EL written by Captain Affleck to the Commander of H.M.S. "Medway" reading "Sir, The Gunner of His Majesty's ship under my Command having represented to me by letter of this date that there is a quantity of stores on board much rubbed and worn and unfit for their proper services. I beg you'll please to order a survey thereon and am Sir, Your most Obdt Servant, P.B. Affleck". Affleck was the captain of H.M.S. "Panther" between 1760 & 1762 and this letter was written between the taking of Pondicherry and the taking of Manilla (Oct. 5th 1862). He subsequently became an Admiral. PHOTO. £150
80 SEVEN YEARS WAR - LETTER FROM AN ENGLISH MERCHANT TO MARSEILLES SENT ON THE DAY OF THE TREATY OF PARIS: 1763 (10 Feb.) EL written in French by an English merchant. Interesting contents include "Le Traite definitif est certainement sur le point d'etre regle et alors la navigation sur ici sera ouverte" referring to the impending resumption of trade.Encircled "JJ" on the flap.
