| 1270 | COMPLETELY HAND-PAINTED DE LA RUE ESSAY FOR THE POSTCARD IN BROWN WITH TRACING OVERLAY; Remarkably fine brown hand-painted Essay on card with the complete design as issued (but with Arms more to the right), complete with original tracing-paper pencil wording overlay with "21 JUL 77" date-mark. The coloured Essay annotated in contemporary pencil; "Placing the Coat of Arms out of the centre of the space, framed by the stamps and the left edge of the card, quite upsets the design, as will be seen by this sketch". This is annotated in a second hand; "certainly not. but the arms might be a little more to the left. [initialled] B." Such 1⁄2d Late Fees are seldom seen on Postcards as early as this; Parmenter notes that the 1⁄2d Late Fee was not introduced until April 1880 (when it was reduced from 1d and then applied to all letters and postcards) so Late Fee usages with this stamp (which was superseded in 1881) are seldom seen, especially on postcards. Rare thus. PHOTO. | £100 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
