Nov. 1883 "PARCELS POST" LEAFLET OUTLINING RATES, ETC.; Nov. 1883 4-page printed "GENERAL POST OFFICE" leaflet (5x71⁄2 ins. pages; minor faults) giving details of the four postal rate steps, maximum dimensions, "PROHIBITED PARCELS", rural parcel collection, etc. Rare; only a handful of these 1st-year leaflets have survived; much rarer than the 1st-Type P.P. labels. Photo plate 19 | £100 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
OFFICIAL G.P.O. Nov. 1883 "PARCELS POST" LEAFLET OUTLINING RATES, ETC.; Similar leaflet to the previous lot, but slightly trimmed (for binding?), so measuring nearly 3½x6½ ins. Ideal album-page size. PHOTO. | £100 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

RARE FIRST DAY USAGE OF THE "PARCELS POST/HIGHBURY PARK/(LONDON, N.)" LABEL (SHOWING PART OF ADJACENT LABEL); Remarkable 1 Aug. 1883 usage of the 1st-Type "HIGHBURY PARK" label bearing a fine 3d on 3d red on lilac overprint tied by a very fine "HIGHBURY PARK/NR. THE GRANGE N." "A"-code c.d.s. of "AU 1/83" (the First Day of the Parcel Post service in Britain), with a second very fine strike alongside. Exceptionally - especially for a First Day Label - the e label is slightly mis-cut and so shows the final "D" of the adjacent label to the left, proving that these early labels were printed in sheets with different P.O.'s names on the same sheet. Unique thus? PHOTO. | £400 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
RARE FIRST DAY USAGE OF THE IRISH "PARCELS POST/BELFAST" LABEL WITH STAMPS PLACED SEPARATELY, CONTRARY TO WORDING; 1 Aug. 1883 usage of the 1st-Type "BELFAST" label tied to a small piece with a very fine "BELFAST/H/AU 1/83" c.d.s. (the First Day of the Parcel Post service in Britain) with parts of three 1d lilacs alongside cancelled by (|?) a dumb bars cancel. The piece is endorsed contemporarily on the reverse; "first parcel poste[d] in Ireland", and it may well have had a franking of 6d or 9d. PHOTO. | £300 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
RARE FIRST WEEK USAGE OF THE 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST/WARWICK" LABEL AT HIGHEST (1/-) RATE; 7 Aug. 1883 usage of the "PARCELS POST/WARWICK" label (minor creasing; endorsed in pencil "To Hereford" on the reverse) on piece of brown paper wrapper franked by a 1/- Orange-brown (seldom seen on PP label) tied by a superb "WARWICK/G" c.d.s. with a second equally fine strike alongside. Very early example of the above 5lbs & up to weight band rate. PHOTO. | £200 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
BOURNEMOUTH 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST" LABEL WITH 4X11⁄2d VENETIAN REDS FRANKING; Attractive 20 Sept. 1883 usage of the 1st-Type "PARCELS POST/BOURNEMOUTH" label franked by two pairs of 11⁄2d venetian reds all tied by v. fine "BOURNEMOUTH/P" c.d.s.'s. Rare first year Parcels Post franking and an unusual franking for the 6d rate. PHOTO. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
LIVERPOOL - 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST" LABEL WITH SPECIAL "PARCELS P.O." C.D.S.; 9 Nov. 1883 usage of this rare "PARCELS POST/LIVERPOOL/(CENTRAL)" 1st-Type label (very minor wear) franked by 3d on 3d red on lilac o.p. tied by a mostly very fine large "CENTRAL PARCELS P.O./A/16/LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. Rare thus. PHOTO. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
NORTHANTS. - 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST/STILTON/(UNDER PETERBOROUGH)" LABEL WITH 3d ON 3d PAIR; 28 Nov. 1883 usage of this 1st-Type label with pair of 3d on 3d lilacs tied by v. fine small "STILTON/C" c.d.s.'s. Attractive and rare. PHOTO. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
PAIR OF 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST/GUILDFORD" LABELS ON LARGE PART WRAPPER TO WILTSHIRE; Large part 24 Sept. 1884 brown paper wrapper endorsed "Per Parcels Post" and addressed to "Westbury, Wilts." having two separate 1st-Type Guildford "PARCELS POST" labels on the front; one having the 6d dull green placed over the P.O. name which was absolutely against P.O. regulations and so having the second label applied without any postage stamp to show the P.O. name clearly. Both labels have very fine "GUILDFORD/M.O.O." "A"-code c.d.s.'s and the 6d dull green is also tied by a further v. fine strike. Rare addressed item with the 1st-Type label and quite exceptional with this double labelling due to an error in applying the postage stamp. Photo plate 19 | £240 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
SUSSEX - HAYWARDS HEATH 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST" LABEL WITH PRINTING ERROR, SENT AT 9d RATE; Attractive 1884 usage (day and month not struck) of the 1st-Type "PARCELS POST/SUSSEX ROAD/(UNDER HAYWARDS HEATH)" label (corner fault; should have read "HAYWARDS HEATH/(SUSSEX ROAD)"!!) franked by 6d dull green & 3d dull lilac both tied by partly fine "SUSSEX ROAD/HAYWARDS HEATH" c.d.s.'s. Unusual P.O. printing error and an unusual franking for the 9d rate. PHOTO. | £160 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
LONDON - RARE 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST/GENERAL POST OFFICE" LABEL WITH BULK-POSTING RED "3D/PAID" C.D.S.; Attractive 2 Jan. 1884 usage of the 1st-Type "PARCELS POST/GENERAL POST OFFICE/(LONDON, E.C.)" label (with faults, but attractive) with a superb red "LONDON/3D/PAID/C" c.d.s., showing that it was part of a bulk-posted group of parcels for which the postage was paid in cash rather than with stamps. Very few (no other?) 1st-Type PP labels with this kind of cash-paid mark have been recorded. PHOTO. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
ESSEX & LONDON - USED "WANSTEAD" (ESSEX) & UNUSED "CHARING CROSS" 1st-TYPE BLUE LABELS; 16 June 1884 usage of the rare blue paper 1st-Type "PARCELS POST/WANSTEAD/(LONDON, E.)" label (some faults, mostly caused by the c.d.s.) with fair "WANSTEAD/E." c.d.s.; plus fine unused (rare thus) blue paper 1st-Type "PARCELS POST/CHARING CROSS/(LONDON, W.C.)" label. Good pair; the blue labels were used for parcels sent locally within the London area. (2 labels). PHOTO. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
WALES - RARE 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST/NEWTOWN" LABEL WITH SQUARED CIRCLE CANCELS; Unusual 5 Sept. 1883 usage of the 1st-Type "PARCELS POST/NEWTOWN" label (some stains & a crease clear of stamp) franked by 6d on 6d lilac & red o.p. tied by a light "NEWTOWN/MON" Squared Circle having a second mostly very fine strike alongside. Rare example of a Squared Circle on a 1st-Type label. PHOTO. | £120 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
LONDON - MATCHED PAIR OF WHITE & BLUE 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST/BROCKLEY ROAD" LABELS OF THE SAME DAY; 28 May 1885 usages of the 1st-Type "PARCELS POST/BROCKLEY ROAD/(LONDON, S.E.)" labels on white and on blue paper, each with v. fine "BROCKLEY-RD./A/S.E." c.d.s. and both stampless (contrary to regulations). It seems almost certain that these labels originated on the same parcel, with one being applied to replace the other. The blue paper was reserved for parcels to be sent locally in London. Amazing pair. (2 labels).PHOTO. PHOTO. 2 | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
SCOTTISH ISLANDS - INNER HEBRIDES - RARE 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST/IONA" LATE USAGE; 9 Aug. 1887 usage of the rare 1st-Type "PARCELS POST/IONA/(UNDER OBAN)" label franked by Jubilee 2d & 1d lilac both tied by a very fine "OBAN/273" duplex having a very fine 2-ring "IONA/446" c.d.s. of the same date alongside. Attractive and a rare example of the Jubilee issue on a 1st-Type label. Plus unusual 1911 usage of the KEVII regd. env. ex Orkney Is. with plain "R" label with unusual tiny "STROMNESS." straight-line mark. (2 items). PHOTO. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
IRELAND - 1st-TYPE "PARCELS POST/DRUMACHEE" LABEL WITH MANUSCRIPT P.O. MARKING; 12 Oct. 1888 (very late) usage of the Irish-style "PARCELS POST/DRUMACHEE/(UNDER ARMAGH)" 1st-Type label with no stamps (contrary to regulations) and having a manuscript "Drumachee/Oct 12th/88" instead of any datestamp. Rare thus; 1st-Type Irish labels are particularly elusive and this is an exceptionally late usage. PHOTO. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
