643 FRANCO-CARIB INSURRECTION- LETTER FROM BRITISH OFFICER AT "OWIA"; 25 Sept. 1796 EL from "St. Vincents, Owia" written by B. Spencer Esq., the British Commander of the Owia District at this time (see next lot), to his sister in Bath charged "1/8" with a mostly very fine "St VINCENT" straight-line mark (very scarce) across the join on the reverse). Spencer gives news of his ongoing Campaign against the French and Caribs in the island; "There is every appearance of bringing this Charib War to an end, as they are so hem's in on all sides and confined to the woods, without food or shelter, that they are coming in [=surrendering] fast all over the Island..." He mentions "my Prize Money for Port au Prince", so presumably he had been involved in operations against the French in Haiti in 1795/96. PHOTO. £300
644 FRANCO-CARIB INSURRECTION - LETTER FROM BRITISH OFFICER AT KINGSTON; 13 Oct. 1796 EL from "Kingston, St. Vincents" written by B. Spencer Esq. (who had until recently been in "...that remote place Owia [?]where I was detained four months in the command of that district.") to his sister in Bath, having an overstruck partial strike of the early "St. VINCENT" mark on the reverse, charged "1/8" in all. The interesting letter gives news of the ongoing insurrection of the local St. Vincent Caribs; "The Charib business has at last terminated happily - as 4,000 of them and French have surrendered themselves, which rids this Island of anything of the kind, as they are all sent to an adjoining one, till a suitable place is named by His Majesty for them. We have had a most fatiguing service of it these four months, hunting them through the woods". Rare Campaign letter from this important stage in the island's history. Plus 4 earlier & later letters with postal marks from the same correpondence, written from London, Portsmouth & the Isle of Wight. (5 covers). [See also the related letter under "Haiti" above.] PHOTO. £240
