CAPTURE OF THE ISLAND BY THE BRITISH - LETTER SENT TO G.B. ALONG WITH DISPATCHES; 14 Jan. 1811 EL (minor faults) from "Seroor" (india) to Scotland "Pr. Honble. Co.'s Ship Exeter" endorsed "Seroor Post Paid 6 Annas" on the front beside 14 Aug. 1811 small "SHIP LETTER/LONDON" transit c.d.s.; there is a fair framed "B.BAY POST PAID" on the reverse. The letter is written by a British soldier with the garrison in India and gives news of recent unrest; he notes that "We are in daily expectation of receiving accounts of the Fall of the Isle of France & the present conveyance is merely detained till the arrival of despatches from that Island to carry home the official intelligence." Indeed, Mauritius fell into British hands in Dec. 1810, so it seems certain that this letter did go on the same ship that took the news back to England. Rare thus. PHOTO. |

VERY RARE EARLY "NELSON" STRAIGHT LINE MARK ON COVER TO ENGLAND: [Dec., 1842] E (minor wear on folds and unnecessarily reinforced with 'magic' tape which ought to be removed by the new owner) addressed to Yorkshire endorsed in m/s '1/-' (double N.Z. outgoing Ship Letter rate to G.B.) and 'Paid' on the front having an inverted but very fine small black "NELSON" mark (light fold) and G.B. m/s '1/4' (double incoming charge) both on the front with partly fine red London "SHIP LETTER" and 2 July, 1843 arrival marks on the back. Research has shown that this letter was carried on the brig 'Union' from Nelson to Sydney and thence to London on the barque 'Kinnear'. Very rare; few pre-1844 N.Z. town marks are recorded, their use on outgoing overseas mail is exceptional and it is believed that only four other examples of this handstamp have been recorded. LUCIA" FLEURON DATESTAMP (YEAR DIGITS OMITTED) ON PREPAID COVER TO FRANCE; Remarkable and fine 22 Nov. 1837 EL (long family letter in French; flap tears clear of marks) from "Castries" to "Aix, France" endorsed "Pr. Packet" and routed via London; having a fine rare "ST. LUCIA/23 NO" Fleuron d.s. on the top flap (partly overstruck by London transit c.d.s.), endorsed "Under 1⁄2 Oz" and prepaid "4-6/2-3/6/9" in all with v. fine red London oval "P-D" on the front.
