496 UNRECORDED (?) HANDSTRUCK "au, mole:" MARK ON BRITISH OFFICER's LETTER TO G.B.; Remarkable 30 Oct. 1797 EL written by "B. Spencer" [previously in Command of a district of St. Vincent after the Carib Wars there; see the two related lots under St. Vincent below] to his sister in England, charged "1/8" with a very fine strike of an unusual lower-case type "au, mole:" mark (previously unrecorded?) on the front, presumably of the independent (French-backed) Toussant Government P.O. Mole St. Nicholas is a small coastal town in the NW of Haiti. The contents show that the writer is the British representative in the area who has been charged with liasing with the Francophile local Government; "...I have hitherto gone as well as possible with this extensive Command, and likely to continue so, altho' not a little difficult to deal with French Men, where many of them are of Republican Principals." Rare letter from this period of uneasy peace in the Caribbean, and a very rare early village marking. PHOTO. £400
