1st OPIUM WAR - LETTER FROM AN OFFICER ABOUT TO EMBARK WITH THE "EXPEDITION" TO CHINA; Fine 4 May 1840 EL (cross-written; a letter from the Officer, Clement Edwards, crossed by one from his wife) from "Trincomalee" to London "Pr. Overland Mail" changed to "via Marseilles", with a mostly very fine scarce crowned boxed "POST PAID" d.s. on the front and charged "3/6"; redirected prepaid to Somerset with a red London manuscript "1". The long letter gives news of the writer's ship having been damaged in a storm off Ceylon and his imminent departure as part of the Expedition to China, leaving his wife and family in the island where he has been stationed for four years. He gives an insight into the Expedition and its views of China; "The Head Quarters on board the 'Rattlesnake' sailed yesterday and as soon as our damages are repaired we shall follow them...I am not yet certain what will be the plan of proceeding; we may attack North or South...At present we are to rendezvous at Singapore...Colonel Burrell of our Regiment commands the Expedition...the Chinese have numbers considerably on their side, but not much skill.
