241 SAILOR's CORRESPONDENCE INC. 1d CONCESSION RATE COVERS WITH STITCH-MARKS WHERE THE PENNIES WERE SOWN ON; Original 1839-42 correspondence of EL's (some dusting etc.) from a British seaman, inc. 1839/40 pair from Portsmouth & Naples to London ex "H.M.S. Benbow" both prepaid 1d and both showing the clear needle-marks where the 1d coin was originally sewn onto the letter itself while it was en route to a British P.O. (having c.d.s.'s of Gosport & London), and one with scarce red UPP handstruck "1" of Sheerness. Very interesting contents about the French blockade of Naples, the writer's hopes of going to fight in the 1st Opium War, his near loss of an eye in Naples, and a remarkable 1842 accident at sea in which his leg was crushed (and his thigh smashed) beneath the ship;s wheel during a transatlantic storm. The latter written from Liverpool Infirmary where he was recovering and noting that he had changed his name from William Taylor to Samuel Weller (after the Dickens character?)!! Good lot. (5 covers). 242 1st AFGHAN WAR & THE 1st OPIUM WAR - NEWS FROM THE FORMER & OF THE EXPEDITION TO THE LATTER; 6 Feb. - 7 Apr. 1840 EL (toned corner barely detracts) from "Ferozepore" (one J.D. Parsons) to an M.P. in London endorsed "Post pd pr Steamer" with a fair red oval Bombay "INDIA" on the front, along with unusual manuscript "Ind. Postage 1-5-0/Steam 0-13-6/[=] Rs.2-2-6"; charged "3/6" on arrival (London c.d.s. of 7 Apr. 1840), with native endorsement on the flap. The contents are from an East India Co. official (?) who has just returned from Afghanistan; "...I have returned safe from Affghanistan - I wrote to you several times from thence, but as the communication with India was so much interrupted by the Belooches, who robbed & murdered our people whenever they had the opportunity, it's very probable many of my letters never reached their destination." He continues; "As we have a large Force still in Affghanistan, the Governor General thinks my services more important here at present...", and then; "Our Expedition for China is now preparing, and Troops are to be sent from Calcutta. Madras and Ceylon...I much doubt of their producing any good results...threatening Pekin is about the only thing that will bring the Chinese Government to their senses..." Historical letter. SOLDIER HAVING BEEN PRESUMED MURDERED; Unusual 23 Jan. 1843 EL from "Bombay" (near fine red oval "INDIA" on the front) to Birmingham "Via Falmouth" and charged "1/-" Packet rate, having unusual contents. The Commander of the 2nd Battalion Artillery, Capt. J.S. Unwin, writes to tell the addressee that her son (during the 1st Afghan War) "...Gunner Alexander Montgomery was absent without leave from his Company while stationed at Kurachee in Scind; every search after him was fruitless and he was struck off the returns as 'Missing' on the 13th March 1841, since which he has never been heard of and it is supposed that he must have been murdered by the enemy and his body concealed." (slight faults at top do not detract) to Northumberland with "RECEIVED FROM/H.M. SHIPS" machine on the front along with blue tombstone-framed Naval Censor mark matching the adjacent dated h.s.; there is also a very fine strike of the very rare London Blitz "[Bomb]/DELAYED BY/ENEMY ACTION" mark nicely placed on the front. This mark was only used on mail delayed by at least 48 hours and as a direct result of bomb damage; very rare on cover. [With photo of P.O.
