| 227 | AFGHANISTAN + BURMA - RED BOXED "MOULMEIN/Paid" D.S. WITH GRIPPING NEWS OF THE KHYBER PASS MASSACRE, ETC.; Similar 6 Mar. 1842 EL from "Camp at Moulmein" with v. fine red boxed "MOULMEIN/Paid" d.s. (creases) on the top flap endorsed "Rupee 1-1-0 Ship and Overland Postage". The letter notes that their hopes of leaving for China have receded, and then continues [the Khyber Pass Massacre had taken place on 13 Jan. 1842, so news was only now filtering out]; "The Order for our going to China passed Council...when a piece of Intelligence came amongst them like a thunderbolt which altered their arrangements. This was the murder of Sir William McNaghten and the complete destruction of the Caubul force - 6,500 men and some 7,000 followers. Up to the last account we have received only one officer, Dr. Brydon, and not one man had reached Jellalabad...all the poor ladies and their children in the hands of these villains; what a dreadful fate we must suppose them to have suffered...it really appears that General Elphinstone was totally incompetent..." He gives very detailed news of other developments in Afghanistan. Important and unusual early cover from Burma. PHOTO. | £300 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

Good contents about the writer finally leaving for the 1st Opium War; "...we are bound for China...Tomorrow morning we are off again:- for Hong Kong in Canton River, whence we are told we are to go to Chusan and then to Pekin...It was to us a novel sight - a fleet of fifty sail in this harbour...We went to call on the Governor..." | 229 | LETTER FROM HONG KONG HARBOUR - ALSO LIEUT. KIRBY's COMMISSION, & THE BALANCE OF THE CORRESPONDENCE; 7 June 1842 letter (some faults; no address wrapper) headed from "On board the 'Pekin', Hong Kong Harbour" with good contents about the progress of the Fleet; "Here we are, progressing towards the scene of the action. We arrived only yesterday having has a very tedious passage from Singapore...the 'Walmer Castle' led us wrong by leading through the inner passage between the Paracel Islands and the Island of Hainan. We were there for eight days tacking to and fro...we were in sight of the Ladrone Islands at daylight yesterday. There is so much uncertainty of sending letters from this place that, as I am going on board the Commandant's ship, where the Post Office is, and the 'Druid', Man of War, sails tomorrow for Bombay, I will send off this little scrawl...It is reported that our Regiment is to be garrison at Chusan, Amoy, &c..." Plus Kirby's 1836 vellum commission, 2½ 1839/41 EL's from the same correspondence before he had left India for Burma (one privately carried to GB and posted locally in London during the 4d Postage Period), and a pair of 1843 letters (no wrappers) written by Kirby on his return voyage at Malta & Ryde. The latter mentions that "...the China Medal which has been given us...". (7 items). | £150 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 230 | THE FINAL BATTLE OF THE 1st OPIUM WAR - GRAPHIC EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE FALL OF CHING-KIANG; Remarkable 26 July 1842 EL (minor wear to outer wrapper; contents fine) to London "Per Steamer via Falmouth" headed from "Chin-Keang-foo" (i.e. Ching-kiang) endorsed "Per Steamer via Falmouth" with red oval Bombay "INDIA" and near fine red boxed "MADRAS" datestamp, charged "1/-". The contents give an update on Kirby's progress, since the letter from Hong Kong in the previous lot, and gives a very detailed account of the taking of Ching-kiang that he witnessed from start to finish, and descriptions of looting and the occupation of the city. "We went up in a convoy...I landed on the Island of Chusan and had a hasty look at the scene of the last action here...The 'Bellisle' with Lord Saltoun and the 98th Regt. had arrived just before us; we called upon his Lordship...had a tedious passage...to the Yang-tsze-Keang River, in the mouth of which was the Admiral Sir Hugh Gough, and the whole Expedition at anchor off Woosung on 26th June...surveyed the River...came in sight of our destination, Golden Island, on the 19th July...the storming of this Fortress...was a very interesting sight...we had a commanding view of the whole Fort and Town...Sir Hugh soon moved on to the attack of the Tartar Camp...They [the Chinese] behaved exceedingly well, standing the fire of musketry and artillery, all but the bayonet, which soon sent them off...We could see the whole process of bringing up the ladders, raising them; then the leading Officer of the Grenadiers of the 55th mounted by himself, and we could see him waiving his sword and engaged with the enemy...we had soon the pleasure of seeing the Colours of the 55th on the wall..." He eventually entered the city and tried to restrain the men (and his fellow officers!) from looting. he describes the stench of the dead bodies, the appalling heat, etc. He notes the British losses as 13 officers & 128 men killed or wounded. He concludes; "The Sappers are now mining the ramparts...after which the 1st & 3rd Brigades [the latter including Kirby's Regiment] start for Nankin which is supposed to be 30 miles further on..." Important eye-witness account of the final Battle of the 1st Opium war. PHOTO. | £750 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 231 | 1st OPIUM WAR - LETTER FROM NANKING AS THE FINAL TREATY WAS BEING NEGOTIATED; 22 Aug. 1842 EL (some closed tears and wrinkling, etc., but barely affecting the text) to London "Per Steamer Via Falmouth" headed from "On board the 'Pekin' off Nankin" with fine red oval Bombay "INDIA" and charged "1/-" on arrival. The letter was written from the British Force that had reached Nanking and threatened to attack the city while Sir Henry Pottinger was busy negotiating the terms of the Peace Treaty that was to be signed a week after this letter was written. The Treaty of Nanking ended the War and forced the Chinese to pay $21,000,000 in silver bullion. The letter gives details of developments at this crucial stage of the conflict; "...a Treaty for Peace is now going on...arrived at this place...the 9th [Aug.]...the Commissioners appointed by the Emperor very soon found out the Plenipotentiary. The first intention was to breach the old wall of Nankin...by the Flag Ship...Sir Hugh Gough advanced with part of the Troops and his Artillery towards the new wall of the City...The Chinese have no dread of ships battering their walls for at Amoy the Men of War fired for several hours and made no impression, but the aspect of the land force was very different to them - the Commissioners came down to the bank and begged most earnestly to be taken off to the Steamer where Sir Henry Pottinger...was, and on the 17th [Aug.] he wrote to the General...'It affords me great satisfaction to have it in my power to inform you that mu negotiations with the Chinese High Officers...have advanced to that stage that authorizes me to beg that you will consider hostilities suspended...The demand on the Chinese is 21 millions of dollars, six to be paid here, two and a half more at Woosung. Some possessions also will be kept, Hong Kong certainly, and it is said that British Consuls will be stationed at Amoy, Ningpo, Ching-Keang-Foo &c...." A surprisingly accurate summary of the Treaty of Nanking written as it was being negotiated. Important Historical letter.PHOTO. | £500 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 232 | HONG KONG - FINAL LETTER SENT AS THE BRITISH EXPEDITION WAS ABOUT TO LEAVE; 18 Dec. 1842 EL (minor faults; parts of flaps lost with seal) to London from "Hong Kong Harbour" endorsed "via Falmouth Per 'Vixen' via Bombay" with fine red oval Bombay "INDIA" and charged "1/-" on arrival. The letter was written two days before the British Fleet left Hong Kong to return to India; "This is certainly the most pleasant stay we have made at any place in China...the people of the Town being under our rule are very civil...we have had our Sepoys on shore and...the hold has been repacked, and the vessel well cleaned inside and out...our ship was originally the most crowded...at Moulmein we embarked in a hurry...we have lost 83 fighting men in these eight months...I hope Sir Henry Pottinger is quite right in the estimate he has formed of the Chinese and the Peace with them. He has given it as his opinion that there is no chance of a disagreement with them for the next 20 years, or otherwise he is sending away a fine Force that may be wished for hereafter when far away...since the Peace two 'accidents' have occurred that do not look well. One is the massacre in Formosa of more than 100 men...the Crews of the Ships 'Nerbudda' and 'Ann'...which vessels were wrecked there in Sept. 1841 and Mar. 1842 - they have been kept in prison for many months and put to death only recently. The other is a disturbance at Canton during which the English Factory and other houses were burnt down." He describes a visit to Whampoa and Canton, describes the Chinese defences, and notes that he was prevented from wandering very far in Canton. He continues; "...Hong Kong is wonderfully improved since our visit in June last; houses, warehouses, hotels, shops, whole streets are springing up in every direction..." Important early letter from the newly ceded island of Hong Kong and interesting reading.PHOTO. | £400 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 237 | NAPOLEONIC P.O.W. LETTER FROM PORCHESTER CASTLE TO FRANCE WITH CENSOR (?) INITIALS; 31 Jan. 1814 EL (trivial faults) to Gironde, France, headed from "Porchester" (the P.O.W. Camp at Porchester Castle in Hampshire) charged "10" in black manuscript and having a distinctive red manuscript squiggle ("Exd."? or initials?) on the lower flap that was presumably added to show that the letter had been examined by the Camp authorities. The letter (in French) mentions the writer having received money safely from a friend in Guernsey, and includes a witnessed authority for the addressee to conduct the POW's affairs in his absence. He notes that "It is five years I have been drinking water."!!
