1134 THE RARE PARCEL-CART "WINDOW CARD" WITH POSTAL RATES ON REVERSE; Colourful c.1888 card (c.6x71⁄2 ins.; horiz. crease) printed in red & black on one side ("PARCEL/POST" with "VR" symbol in centre) having plain "Inland Parcel Post" rates printed on the the other side. These cards were an experimental attempt to drum up support for the new P.O. service in London in the later 1880s; householders were told to place the card in the window when they had a parcel to be collected for posting. 1171 LUDLOW - RARE EARLY "BY THE KING" LETTER TO LONDON; 9 Aug. 1620 EL (minor wear inside) - headed inside "By the King" and dated to his 17th year as King of England and 53rd year as King of Scotland, i.e. 1620, during the reign of King James I of England (James VI of Scotland since 1567) - from "our Castle of Ludlowe", signed by "Tho. Smalman" and addressed "To our trustie and right welbeloved Sir Edward Bromley, knight, one of the Barons of our Courte of Exchequer at Westminster". The letter concerns sundry papers and witnesses to be examined in a dispute about the Charter of the town of Much Wenlock, etc. Important historical letter, previously not dated or read by former owners. This 1780s service with the Galloway Postboy regularly receiving 6d per letter from the Bank of Scotland on his own account instead of postage being charged is well documented in the early issues of the Postal History Society Bulletin. N.B.Ry." on the front and having a yellow paper printed paper "North British Railway Co./PARCEL" label (originally folded over top edge) on the front.
