162 LEEK (STAFFS.) - NAPOLEONIC P.O.W.'s MAIL TO FRANCE; 28 Nov. 1812 & 24 Apr. 1813 pair of EL's (in French; unusually neither being sealed) from "Leek" to Quimper, each endorsed and signed "Single", "Not Paid" and "Chas. Grey, Agent" on the front, being charged "11" and "4" on delivery in France. The second letter reveals that the writer is a French Naval Officer who was captured on 9 Aug. 1803 "in sight of Cadiz" and taken to Gibraltar, where he was in prison until 24 Dec. 1803, when he was moved to England where he was still "sur parole a Leek". 163 Similar pair of 1813 EL's endorsed & signed "Chas. Grey, Agent", plus later letter sent just after the end of the War; June/July 1813 pair of EL's from the same correspondence from the POW in "Leek" (contents ref. problems of delays of mail from POW's to France, and a possible POW exchange) with the same "Single Not Paid" signed endorsements as the previous lot; plus matching 11 Sept. 1815 EL prepaid ("P 1/10") to Quimper (the writer no longer had a postal concession) with near fine (partly overstruck) scarce boxed "LEEK/154" mileage mark and charged "12"(?) on delivery. 164 IRELAND - SOLDIERS' 1d RATE COVERS WITH RARE "PAID" MERMAID & DERRY MARK; 10 Apr. 1812 EL from "Dubling Barrack" [= Dublin] to Market Harborough with red m/s "1" (endorsed on reverse & countersigned on the front) and partly fine rare red Dublin Mermaid-framed "PAID" d.s. with black m/s "2" charge on the front (presumably for the unofficial MH local post to "Grate Bowden"); plus 12 Feb. 1837 EL from "Londonderry" to Bannockburn headed & countersigned for a QMS with red m/s "1" and almost very fine red boxed "PAID AT/DERRY". 181 CHRISTMAS DAY IN THE TRENCHES 1914 - THE FOOTBALL MATCH; 25 Dec. 1914 fascinating and historical letter (no env.) written in pencil on 10 sides of 7insx4½ins notepaper from a soldier with the BEF in the trenches. "This will be the most memorable Christmas I've ever spent ....The Germans commenced by placing lights all along the edge of their trenches and coming over to us, ....Some of our chaps went over to their lines. ... There must be something in the spirit of Christmas, as today we are all on top of our trenches running about ....We also each had a card from the Queen ....After breakfast we had a game of football at the back of the trenches!....I never expected to shake hands with Germans between the firing lines on Christmas Day ...etc." A wonderful eye witness account of an historic event. £120
